  • Twang Banger user need help

I just put a twang banger in my strat and I have a high "pop" noise if I slightly touch a pot or the 5 way switch of my guitar when I play the TwBg

Anyone got an idea on the root cause ?

Other PUs are APS1 and no problem with them.

Even putting the switch on the bridge pos. make this high "pop" noise .

The noise is similar to touching a magnet (pole) with a screwdriver on a PU but I have this noise while touching volume knob, tone knob, pickguard...everything when I put the TwBg on !!!

    Heeelp !!

I also found the same problem with TB. It is very apparent compared to APS1s in other postions. First I thought I installed it wrong. I also get the slight "pop" when moving the switch to bridge position. I think it's because the copper plate at the bottom which is very sensitive to movement or shock. After few days, I got used to it and it doesn't bother me too much.

I installed a TB in the bridge and APS1s in M&N positions and all is very well. You might have a missing ground connection or it could be related to the plate on the TB. Call Duncan support and see what they say, (good luck with that) .

Do you have any shielding that could be hitting the plate? I had that problem...but now that I think about it, it didn't produce a pop, instead, the pickup was grounded and didn't work!

make sure the plate is grounded just like a tele bridge. There should be a wire that goes from the same place the black wire comes from and attaches to the bas plate with a little solder. make sure that is all connected well and see if that helps. Also the sheilding idea is a good one to check, make sure that plate doesn't touch anything else that would ground it out or screw up the grounding of that pickup.

Thanks for the inputs folks !

The pick up works well, in fact it is highly sensitive to knocks when overdriven.
I was surprised 'cause duncans are quite silent usualy.

I partly solved the problem by filling the strat PU cavities with soft foam (the one inside the duncans PU boxes)

I'm really satisfied with this PU , the Twang Banger is great !

Re: Twang Banger user need help

It's probably the magnetic field of the plate on the bottom of the pup that's doing it. Is it grounded? Even if it is it'd most like be a little more microphonic.

Yes , the bottom copper plate is grounded but still the PU is more sensitive to bug noises and microphonics.

                  BTW , it's a great PU !

Re: Twang Banger user need help

Did someone tried to wax the copper baseplate ?

I got microphonic high feedback, it's impossible to turn the amp up...

I think that the copperplated baseplate must be free of vibration to cure the problem. Am I wrong ?

Re: Twang Banger user need help

Try putting a couple strips of black electrical tape across the bottom of the pickup, so it dampens the baseplate, the pickup, and the pickguard.....so they don't resonate together.

Re: Twang Banger user need help

When I got my TB,it had a loose plate on the bottom....I took the plate off, scraped some fine flakes off of a candle and took a hair dryer and put the plate back on...That bottom plate could be a source for several problems?

Check your pot grounds for good connection to your TB also...

Do you suggest to wax all the pickup, like this :
                          http://www.stewmac.com/tradesecrets/...s26fralin.html

                          Or only the baseplate ?

                          thanks for your patience...

I potted the pickup and it's solved the problem.

                            Thanks to all
