How come I don't like the bridge position.

I've had 3 humbuckers, a P-90, and 3 strat single coils and I never ever find the bridge to sound musical enough or fat. The closest I've come to liking is a stock HB that was in my old Fender Prodigy (slighty odd HSS strat) it had so many hamonics and was high-end picky and was kind of thin sounding but never really seemed like a problem with bass. Anyway I found that a JB I put in (where I pratically rewired the whole guitar to get the thing to stop humming) lacked bass even though I loved the growl and harmonics that would jump out either intentionally or unintentionally. How ever the treble strings were a little metallic and thin and it seemed like the pup needed to be in a LP because of it's lack of bass/blubber (now I think I know why ZERB put one in his neck). It think what I would like is a really fat & cutting pup with easy harmonics that would combine well with a alnico 5 transparent neck position with PAF vibe (i.e Jazz, 59n, PAF pro, PAF joe etc.) Anyway I haven't tried them all but I don't think that HB's and strats mix well.......... Isn't that right mr. Van Halen? :smack: Nevermind

Re: How come I don't like the bridge position.

Have ya tried the Bridge tone mod that stratdeluxer97 has posted in the vault??? It's easy to do, and allows ya to have some tonal control over the Bridge position in a strat. The Bridge position is probably most strat players least favorite place to be, however. I like a Duncan SSL-3 in a strat bridge, but that's just my preference. The Bridge position is rather Bright and cutting in a strat. :)

Just go to the vault, and look for tutorials by stratdeluxer97. It only requires soldering a very small jumper wire between 2 lugs on the switch. It's under " Tips ", by Stratdeluxer. :)

I have a feeling your guitar is not set up as well as it could be and your JB not properly adjusted. The JB is not lacking in output and bass or mids and the highs are not thin.

Why not show your ax to a really good player or repair person in your area and have them give it a look-see?

I'm not fond of bridge pups either. There isn't a lot of bass available to the pup right back there. Tele's have a good rhythm sound, but for solos all bridge pups are far too shrill IMO.

I sort of agree, but I'm learning to use the bridge settings on strats and teles for rhythm parts! Istill prefer the fatter tone of the neck pup for leads, but a tele sounds particularly good on the bridge pup with some distortion for playing crunch chords :)

I've had to learn to broaden my tonal palette, but I think some variation in tone is more interesting.

I agree with that statement completely, Gary!
Especially after taking 4 guitars in the last 5 years and swapping pickups out of every one of them at least 3 times each. These poor axes didn't know what they were going to sound like from one month to the next. I never really got to know them that well until I settled down with what's currently in all of 'em and finally played them enough to make acquaintances. Only I'm getting ready to go round #4 with old Mr. 60's Strat that I love dearly, but hasn't ever quite been able to capture the tone I've searched for in that axe. I'm going with a SSL-3 in the bridge, an APS-1 in the middle, and a SSL-1 in the neck this time, and I'm thinking this time I'm gonna get close.

I installed the jump from Stratdeluxer's tutorial. I find myself using the bridge/bridge-mid settings more than I ever did before. At least in my case it was well worth the effort.

good job rumplstratskin! You can NEVER go wrong with a bridge position pup, whether it be in a strat or in a HB guitar. There's so much more available with the bridge.

Re: How come I don't like the bridge position.

very true about the sounds available from the bridge. Just put a new set of pups in and am still trying to get the thing dialed in. it didn't help matters that I tried to go to 11ga strings and in the process totally screwed up the intonation. Went back to 10s and cleared the bulk of that up. Still doing the fine tuning but it's almost there. Now just have to set the amp for the new pups.

Hopefully, the gain will be worth the trouble when all is said and done.

I find the easiest thing to do is to level out the bridge saddles by tightening the trem springs first. Then the truss may also need just a slight turn to compensate the extra tension. The point is to adjust your 11 setup incrementally till it's similar, playing wise to 10's, then set your intonation, otherwise, you're kind of trying to hit a moving target.
Going from 10 to 11's shouldn't present to many problems, though - just go through your setup routine step by step making minor adjustments till you're there.

that's pretty close to what I like ... I have APS's with the SSL-3 bridge, and get a nice tone spectrum.
I love the APS in the neck, but I'd like to try an SSL in the mid spot, and a Twangbanger bridge. :) Not really big contrasts as much as variations on a theme. the basic tone is there !

Re: How come I don't like the bridge position.

I've got an SSL-5 in the bridge of one of my strats, w/ the jumper mod. I totally love it. I dont know how, but awhile ago I had it to where I could change my SSL-5 to sound like an SSL-1. I dont know how, but I turned the pot backwards (at 10 it sounded like the SSL-1, at 0 it sounded like the SSL-5) and if I could figure out how to do that again, I would.

You're right Curly. I just took the easy way out. KFC will be after me for sure now. I'm glad I put tens back on it though. Now that I'm getting the pups set up I have all the sound I need from the tens. I have more than enough punch in the pups now so there was no real need to go heavier at this time. Got ahead of myself yet again.

Re: How come I don't like the bridge position.

I like the sound of other people's bridge tone (EVH, Page, Satriani) now I notice those are all humbuckers and two of them use strat style guitars. However amps & other crap play the biggest role for anyones tone (plus I still don't want to have to change pickguards whenever I want a sound with a little more......raw beef). I find that the best sounding pickups (bridge) in the audio clips on SD are the teles JD & Broadcaster are my favorite then the Blues Saraceno for HBs. I've been thinking about that twangbanger (I'll put a post on that) and it seems like maybe it'll actually let me like all 5 positions on my strat.

Re: How come I don't like the bridge position.

I tried a local guitar w/ a twangbanger and aps-1s in the neck and mid. I think that when I get some money rollin my way, thats whats gonna go in my MIJ strat. The twangbanger was great, and if I wasnt in a store, I wouldve cranked it and rocked out, but I have respect for the other folks there, unlike alot of the other dudes.
