  • Custom vs Dimarzio Super Distortion

How do they compare to each other? Output, eq, dynamics, tone.
I know what the charts say say but they are never right. The guitar is mohogany with a floyd.

Re: Custom vs Dimarzio Super Distortion

I can answer that since the Super D used to be my fave and I'm now using a Custom.

So, here's how they compare IMO:

Output: SH5 has less output. If you change for a Cusotm, you'll probably have to crank up the gain a little to get the same result.

EQ: The Super D is bassier and middier, the high end is similar in my ears, despite their respective charts (Seymour's always seems to indicate more high-end that what I hear). I like both for not being ear-bleeding.

Dynamics: This is where the Super D is better IMO. When you crank the amp, all kinds of cool things happen with the Super D. Dynamics is hard to describe with words... as you probably know.

Tone: The super D is darker and harsher, that is why I decided to stick to the Custom... the Custom can be sweet and kick a$$. The Super D can ONLY kick a$$, and I mean REALLY kick a$$

      My 2 favorite pickups.

I love my Super D. It seems to be more suited for wild guitar soloing and over-the-top screams. It also works really well with heavy distortion. I think it's more of a heavy metal shred type of pickup; that's how I use it anyway .

I've never used a Custom, but the Super Distortion is a wild pickup.

I find it to be a horrendous clean pickup, but when the gain is pegged it does magical things to your amp. I'd describe it, but it's hard to put into words. The pickup itself is compressed, so it helps your notes come out more even.

It's definatly a shred type pickup though I use it for heavily distorted punk rhythm. The pickups compression helps keep the rhythm consistent under heavy downstroking and helps make for some huge chugga chugga muting action, if you know what I mean.

I've been favouring my JB lately because it has more articulation and cruch at moderate gain levels, but if you're into high gain solos with lots of cut, a Super D is great.

i have a super d my charvel model 1 and it kicks some serious ass!! since the guitar has no tone pot and a maple/maple neck it balances out well so it's not too bright or too dark. i also have one in my les paul and it still kikcs ass!!
it's definitely an 80's metal screamer! which is what i like , im with Biu on this one!
and i have a Custom in my other charvel and it just rips! and nice cleans too, not too hot (which i like) and not so hot as too have crappy cleans. i like the whole pssed off PAF idea, it's a great pickup. cuts through the mix really good and is never really muddy. dynamics are great, and it's all good!

Thanks for all of your help. The SD sounds more what I want. I have a LP copy with a set of A2 pros and they give me my vintage sweetness. I want balls to the wall in this guitar.

Could I get away with a regular spaced one in my floyd guitar?

Yes, you could go with regular on a Floyd equipped guitar. F-Spaced are just set more evenly with the trem guitars.

I know. But are dimarzio's pole pieces closer together anyway?

it wont matter as much if it's f spaced or not, i ahve a normal one in my charvel and it's fine.
