  • jimmy page wiring: photo and explanation

    hi,

here is the photo of a les paul jimmy page cavity.

i read here, that some scheamtics on the net (like the electronicsguitar.com ) don't work. the gibson official looks good but not in totality as wrote archie

is there a specialist able to analize this photo and eventualy able to correct the gibson schematic?

    thanx

I put the Schector SuperRock harness in my LP about 25 years ago, hand wired with 4 Schector OmniPots. I believe that this harness does everything that the JP harness does. As I recall there was an error in the 1980 edition of the Donald Brosnac book, which I corrected and updated for modern push-pull pots:

Perhaps the experts here can point out any errors in this drawing (I never did try wiring up the revised design). I came up another drawing which supposedly would have made the split coils humcancelling (at least when the phase switch wasn't pulled out):

I've come up with better ways to make humcancelling coil splits since then... like flipping the magnet and inverting the leads as PRS did. So any suggestions on the second drawing would be appreciated as well!

The following link has the corrected drawing from the Donald Brosnac book, as well as the two drawings referenced above for one stop shopping:

P.S. Was that a picture of your own guitar, or something that you found on-line? I'm surprised that Gibson used the gray shielded cable...

        hahaha ummmmm holy crap
I have had the wiring for years and swear by it. I think more people should have it

but uhhhhhhhh mine looks gorgeous and clean

that thing looks like a MESS

        did your guitar throw up?

guitarelectronics has one but its not that effectient either, though it works. Get it done professionally - trust me. It cost me a couple of bucks, but I have NEVER looked back!

Supposedly torresengineering.com has a pre wired set- you just connect the pickups

Re: jimmy page wiring: photo and explanation

This Gibson drawing and schematic are ALMOST exactly what Robert_S sent me a few years ago, saying it was THE Jimmy Page wiring. (Checked too quickly and missed the 2 errors that Robert & Artie point out below. My BAD!!! ) I've never tried it.

If you want something different, what is it?

BTW those photos are not useful to me since I've never seen push/pull pots that look like that underneath. Also, some of the wires go "under" components so we can't tell exactly where they go. Lastly, please use an Orange Drop or equivalent tone cap instead of that ceramic cap.

Finally, I've attached an explanation of the JP switching options that also came from Robert.

SORRY I don't understand exactly what do you mean (as most french citizen i am not really good in english ...sorry)

                what i need is:
push pull for each pickup in the two volumes pots
push pull for serie-// in the bridge tone (serie when push)
push pull for phase-reverse phase inthe neck tone (phase when push)

Re: jimmy page wiring: photo and explanation

The only problem with the schematic that fresh start posted is that it is missing one connection.

Look at the green/white wire on the neck pick, it has a line that just stops. That line (wire/connection) needs to be made to the neck pickup volume pot push pull, which also has a wire that goes nowhere.

Re: jimmy page wiring: photo and explanation

Actually, its missing two connections. The red wire, (black, in my version), from the top of the neck pup to its volume control is also missing. (Robert pointed this out a long time ago.)

Here's the "touched-up" version: (And converted to Duncan colors.)

Edit: Removed the last part of this post because it probably only confused the issue.

You also need two .02uf capacitors as shown in Artie's schematic.

In the photos, you can barely see a round (disk-shaped), orange/brown capacitor between the top two pots and a second one between the bottom two pots. They are connected with yellow wires. These are necessary for the tone controls.

                      Hope this helps.

Robert - I apologize for not carefully comparing that Gibson crap with the schematic you sent to me.

Artie - thanks again for the drawing, and especially the kind correction(s)

Re: jimmy page wiring: photo and explanation

You're welcome. I've been studying this for quite awhile, since the question keeps coming up. The thing that was driving me nuts was that if you lift the neck tone switch, both pups lose their ground. It took me forever to realize that they actually wanted both pups full-on, in-series, with one out-of-phase. Can't imagine what that sounds like.

On that schematic, where coming from the pickups it says red/white to Lug B on the treble volume DPDT, how do you connect that? Do you just solder both wires to Lug B?
