If you are looking for a good vintage tone from a telecaster try this. I bought a Squier Affinity tele and rewired it to that of an original single bridge pickup Esquire:
Backward Position: Bridge pickup bypass tone pot for a sound hotter than a tele will ever give you.
Middle: Bridge pickup with tone pot included in the circuit sounds like a normal tele
Forward: Passes through a resistor and capacitor and bypasses tone to get a preset toned down and bassy sound.
I took the neck p/u out and got an Esquire pickguard on Ebay. This was a very interesting and fun project and resulted with a great vintage sounding guitar.
