  • A rather belated hello!

    Hello everyone!

I've been lurking and peeping and chiming in here for about a month now, and for some reason just missed the mark completely with the hello topic. My bad, but I hope to rectify it now, because I do not like bad manners.
So, apologies for the delay, here's a chorus about me, and let's put this thing into overdrive!

My name is Daniel, you can call me Dan, or Danny, or even Shirley if you want, I won't mind, hah!
I'm 33, I'm from Split, Croatia. I've been playing electric guitar on and off for 18-19 years now. First got into music at age 6 when I started learning piano. At age 9 I got my first acoustic, and my first electric at 14. A Yamaha Pacifica 112 HSS, which I still have to this day (although heavily modded ofc), and it still gets played from time to time. Not a great guitar but it has sentimental value and all that.
I like and listen to all sorts and genres of music, ranging from classical to metal to jazz, funk, blues, prog, you name it. If it sounds and feels good, I'm gonna dig it.
    I work as a web-admin/photographer/graphic designer.
I absolutely love animals, cooking, joking around, and most of all, my very supportive and talented s.o. <3

I've already had interactions with some of you, and I feel you're a very cool, fun and knowledgeable bunch. I only hope to further our communication and to contribute some valuable content here in the future.
As for Seymour Duncan pickups, most of my guitar idols use them, and a JB/Jazz set was my first introduction to the SD universe. It was love at first strum, and it's only been growing since. I hope to once be able to afford (almost) every SD pickup ever made.

Thanks for reading, and I'd be very happy answering any and all questions you might have, personal or otherwise.

    Cheers!
    Dan

And once again, greetings from Arizona, US.
Was just playing my Jackson that has the Jazz/JB combo.

Nice! My kinky Dinky has a 59/Dime combo. Jazz/JB are in a late 60s german-made LP copy.

Oh it sure does. The Jazz was in it before the 59 arrived, but the 59 suits it better. And the dime is split via pp-pot.

I have a Jazz n in my DXMG and love it there but I can certainly see where a 59n would work just as well.

I really wanted to pair a Dime set. Since it's (for now) a hardtail (and roasted maple neck and fretboard), the Jazz was just too huge and boomy. It will get "Floyded" rather soon, I hope.

Yours is already a trem with a rosewood freboard I suppose, so it's safe to assume the Jazz suits it better than in mine. Plus that reverse headstock, grrrr, jealous.

When I originally got it, it had a pair of EMG HZ3'S in it. Passive pickups, 13k with ceramics, they didn't sound bad. Especially for $140US. I went through a few changes and now it has a Jazzn/JB set.

Welcome! I grew up in Europe and remember watching games of the KK Split (Jugoplastika then) on TV growing up

                    I also started with a Jazz/JB set.

OK...let's get this back on track. Apparently we have all forgot how this works. WE ask YOU questions, you answer them. Here we go:

#1 Croatia? What would us old men call it (Pre-Soviet breakup name?)
#2 What do you do for a living there? Explain a little deeper...do you run a porn site or what?!?!?!
#3 What is the nearest big city to you?
#4 What is your dream guitar?
#5 How many guitars do you have?
#6 What about basses, Keyboards, acoustic - have/play any of those?
#7 What/who first inspired you to want to play electric?
#8 Who are your main influences? Name these idols!
#9 Iced tea, Lemonade, or half & half? Does this even make sense in Croatia?
#9 Do you own an AK 47 - and if so from what country?
#10 Do you have American Country music there, and from what decade, and if so do you like it?
#11 Ace, Gene, Peter, or Paul?
#12 KISS Studio albums vs Live Albums?
#13 What is your favorite "Rock" band shirt (logo)?
                      #14 Last concert you saw?
#15 Concert you wish you could see? (No time constraints)
#16 Other hobbies when not playing guitar? What style of cooking , for instance...
#17 Significant others (Wife, Children, Dogs, Cats, Les Pauls...)
#18 Favorite Beer, Wine, Whisky, and mixed drink.

Ace, you need to brush up on your geography. Croatia was part of the former Yugoslavia.

Well, depends on how old you old men really are!
You might call it the Kingdom of Croatia, or the Kingdom of Dalmatia, or the Kingdom of Illyria, or the Austro-Hungarian Empire, or the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, or.....
...but you probably mean Yugoslavia - the 20th century Europe's punk-rocker.

If only I ran a porn site... I'd be knee deep in Gretsches, lol.
I work at a local company that organizes press events and handles web-sites for other companies. I do primarily photography, press events, the rest is web-administration and basic maintenance. Sometimes I need to do some video, editing, graphic design. In any other place in the world it seems you'd be able to make a decent living out of this, but Croatia is stupid-expensive, especially for your local average Ivan.
The last two months I've been of work because of a broken hand, so the well is running dry. Still some therapy to do, then it's time to get back out there and earn, son. Got guitars to finish.
If I had an option to choose and specialize in one of the things I do for work, studio photography would do nicely, products and such. The occasional puppy shoot, ok, but humans, gtfo with your fugly selves.

                            #3
Oof. Technically, Split IS the big city around here, but you're about 3-4 hours away from Zagreb, the capital and the biggest city.
Add another hour and pick a lane, and you're in Vienna or Budapest.
Or just take a ferry in Split and you're in Italy in a couple of hours.

                            #4
Dream guitar - one that makes me play like I do in my dreams, and also never ever requires a setup. Don't think they make those just yet. But there's a lot of iconic guitars I'd like to have/play.
An LP like Gary Moore's is pretty high up the list.

                            #5
Electrics? Currently six, in various project stages. Strat, tele, LPc, dinky, a few mutts and mods and no-names. If I just get these all finished up, I could finally focus on buying more.

                            #6
Yes, one bass, Cort SP-PB (precision copy, the mod process on this one should round up nicely in a week tops), one keyboard, Korg EK-50 (it ain't much but it makes nice sounds), a no-name midi thing, and 5 acoustics (3 good - 2 firewood).
I play any and all of them when I have the time and my hand works.
I started playing piano first, at age 6 I think. Then came classical guitar, then the electric around the same time girls started to be a thing. Go figure!

                            #7
I love all kinds of music and have so since I was a freckle, I'd end up playing something either way, but really electric, my old man teaching me Little Wing intro was probably a pivotal moment.
                            So, dad and Jimi.

                            #8
Dimebag, Gilbert, Nuno, Gary Moore, Knopfler, Atkins, Green, Benson, JB, Jimi, Petrucci, EVH, Prince, Steve Stevens, Jonny Greenwood, .........
This could and should go on for days.

                            #9
I love both iced tea and lemonade. Honestly, never even considered mixing them together, if that's what a half-and-half is.
If you ordered a half and half in Croatia, you'd probably get a confused look, or maybe a coffee with a ton of milk.

                            #9
No AK-47s here. But there was one. Once. YU-made. Not much of a gun culture here, honestly. Plus the illegality of it all. But, I do have an old polish Radom Vis 35, a 9mm Browning type of thing.
Grandpa left it to me, it doesn't function.

That's it for part 1. Part 2 coming up later.
Now, it's physical rehabilitation time. Imma be a humbucker again!

The biggest difference between Chet Atkins and Dimebag? Probably the beard...

Hmmm, US country music. I mean, it's really not likely you'd ever walk into a place, club, bar, or something here, and hear country playing, or a country playin band live. But you won't hear VH or Megadeth anywhere, although you'd have better chances.
We've heard of country, we know what it is (I guess).
Being a guitar afficionado, I do enjoy me some Mason, Hiland, Gill, Pearson, Trucks, Hoffmann...

Ace, ofcourse. (secretly tho, my answer is Bruce Kulick, psssst)

Not that influenced by Kiss personally, but considering their stature and stage show, I'd've loved to get a chance to see them live. Listening, generally I prefer studio recordings. Live album has to have something special, a performance so inspired, energetic or amazing or rare.

Oof. My favorite is my Pantera shirt in the style of Planet Caravan, BUT, the most iconic trio you could see on a shirt here are KISS, Metallica and Nirvana.
My fav band-logo...maybe Death or Slayer?

Last concert I saw was "Pips, Chips and Videoclips", a couple of years ago. They were a huge rock band here.
Last big name concert I saw was Roger Waters' The Wall tour, here in Split back in 2013. Jeez, time flies...

Pantera 1990 in Moscow. Anytime I see the Domination video, it just feels like a huge energetic metal riot.
Any Foo Fighters show with Hawkins. I tried to get tickets when they were playing in Pula Arena in Croatia, but they sold out online in 11 seconds. Not an exaggeration.
                              Gary Moore in Montreaux.
Dire Straits 1985 in Split. First show of the Brothers in arms world tour, first Brothers in arms live performance. I wasn't even born then, but my old folks went, and still mention that show.

Cooking. I'm trying to master the art of the home-made dough. I'm already at the stage I make better pizza dough than half of the pizza places around. AND THERE ARE HUNDREDS.
Also, while grandma is still kickin tryin to learn her specialties and recipes that would die with her if I let it happen. Homemade crust, like for a pie with many layers of crust. She kills those.
Other than that, mostly mediterranean cuisine. Don't get me wrong, I love a good patty with some fries as much as the next guy, but there's a whole world out there just waiting to be put in a pot.
Drawing, I like to make illustrations by hand, make vectors out of them and then make my own shirt designs, or decals and stuff.

SO. Long time gf, I consider her my wife, but we both dislike the idea of marriage. She is very reasonable. She understands the cat comes first.
We couldn't bring ourselves to get another dog after our pug died. We're getting ready, but would like a bigger dog, and that is a no-no until we sell the apartment and get a house. Preferably (and we're workin on it hard) in another country.

                              Beer: Ice cold wheat.
Wine: red. Local wines are absolutely world-class.
Whiskey: anything that's a perfect balance of cheap enough and good enough. So yeah, a bottle of Black Label will do.
                              Mixed drink: whiskey and coke.
