  • Sennheiser e 906. Switches

Just a quick video to show the differences in the switch settings in a high gain guitar application.

I've always liked the clips I hear of the 906. Much more usable than a 609. I hated the 609 when I had it, LOL.

That being said, I didn't love the top or lower setting here. Seems to me like the middle setting was balanced, natural, and pretty true to the source. Seems to me that if you had to set the mic to either the top or the lower setting, then probably the way the whole rig is being adjusted needs to be rethought.

Great video, though. Thanks for taking the time. What speaker was this?

The clip was using an Eminence DV-77.

And I agree, the middle setting will be the most useful for what I do.

I just have mine set at w/e the default setting was (Middle?). It sounded great out of the box & I don't usually fiddle w/ stuff unless I have to

Yeah, mine's in the middle. I just checked. It sounds best like that in your video too

I should try it switched down when I'm recording at night/super low volumes to get rid of the fizziness. Never thought of doing that...

I just had time today so I got a little more familiar with this mic. Seems like it's low pass, neutral, high pass.
So ya, I could probably lose some fizziness too at times.

I'm not sure I'd call it "low pass", as much as a high-end tweak. But yes, I liked it best "flat"

I really like mine. Most of the time I use it in 'flat', but have occasionally used the low pass when combining with a brighter mic.

FWIW I was able to achieve similar affect with a plain 609 by just moving it between the outside seam to the center cone seam. ;-)

Truth is, I like my 609 a little bit better, it seems clearer and a touch brighter most of the time.
But also I am more familiar with it.

I used a 906 for several years. Never quite got what I wanted but with some massaging it was OK. Went back to a 57 for little while. Still just OK. Then I saw Pete Thorn using an AT4050 on his cab. Its been my go to cab mic ever since.

I like my 906...though it can get muddy sometimes (sounds glorious when you get the position right in the sweet spot & it suits the amp that your recording, for instance my Brutus Live & Archon heads, JVM too) but also, I really like the Cheap Superlux 609 copy I just bought last month or so, which IS brighter & clearer. It works great w/ my Laney IRT120, Randall T2 & some of my other 'darker' voiced amps especially, though it kinda sounds fine with anything tbh...

End of the day I'm not super picky though...

The REAL reason I bought the Superlux is 'cause it hangs over the side of the cab and is quick and hassle-free to record w/ (and cheap )....

That it sounds as nice as it does is a bonus
