    Time to make some hybrids?

OK thanks!! Will do probably tonight. I think I goofed the series link between the coils, because the coils are reading well with the multimeter but with normal wiring at the pots/switch I'm only getting one coil, and when I ground red/white it gets fuller but not as full as I'd expect.

    Time to make some hybrids?

Thanks for this!! I’m getting around to this and hit what seems to be a hurdle - custom is 4 conductor but the 59 is 2 conductor. So the 59 screw coil has two black wires coming out of it, vs the customs coil which has black and white. I’ve hooked it up a couple different ways, getting some...

Mini hums in a humbucker ring

Considering a set of mini-hums. I've seen the conversion rings. But why wouldn't mini-hums fit in regular humbucker rings? The only dimension I see being a problem is the mounting hole width for the mini-hum is 1/8" narrower than the regular hum. Has anybody done this?

What made you switch out pickups in the first place?

My heroes all tinkered with guitars. Seemed like a good thing to do.

Thanks! I know I'm like... why did I take those pickups out again? Lol. Might need to put them back in.

So, talking to AI about pickups...

AI just regurgitates stuff it reads on the internet. The internet is already full of bad opinions. So, good not to take it too seriously.

    Tele neck recommendations

I figured it would be too old-timey for me. I'm not beholden to vintage tones at all. Glad I tried it though. Makes me want to try more Antiquity pups. Hopefully I can stay satisfied with the Donahue in the bridge...

Teach me about bass strings, please.

99% of strings are hex core, nickel, roundwound or flatwound. Start there, no need to go outside of that unless there's a specific use case. I preferred rounds until I gigged bass with a real band, selling tickets and booking regional venues and doing all that. I found that flatwounds fill the...

Everyone has a smartphone at this point.

It's that way everywhere, bigger forums, social media, etc. Hard to get anyone to listen to your stuff no matter how much effort you put into it. The most engagement I've ever received from a music clip was when using funky hashtags and wearing a headlamp while playing the guitar with some...

    Tele neck recommendations

Alrighty. Reporting back. I tried the Lari, A2Pro, and Antiquity I in the neck. Here's a quick rundown. Stock Fender Vintage Noiseless - chimey, spanky, I like the bit of sponginess in the attack (alnico II mags), but its a bit muddy/unclear and string definition is poor. Lari - brighter than...

Is anyone here experienced with EMG?

I would start with one of EMGs recommendations rather than mix and match. That way you have a better baseline for what’s going on. Take inspiration from their prewired HSS pickguards. I didn’t find a volume drop between the 81 or 89 in the bridge and the S in the neck/middle. You can adjust...

Mojotone vs. Philadelphia Luthier Tools magnets

Tip - magnets usually arrive in a labeled bag, but you should also label your magnets with sharpie and/or masking tape. That way there’s no question which is which if a magnet ends up not making it back in the labeled bag.

How to choose a 5 string bass for a better B string sound?

Long scale is fine but the real trick is finding the right gauge of B string. Like the .135 from your string set might be flubby but a .130 might be just right. You really have to treat the low B as a separate item. Get your 4 string set dialed, then pursue the B string separately through...
