    School me on Squier

Might want to ask the bot lol. We're not gonna know. Squier is bomb for working on modding tho. Pretty good base, won't ever be epic, but takes improvements well. And if 80s hates Fender, you know he hates Squier. 😂

Seymour Duncan Announces The Duff McKagan Signature PJ Pickup Set!

I think it sounds awesome like that. The nature of the J being cooler and in the bridge position blends in less of it. Of course you could always volume balance it.. But he says he just likes his knobs dimed all the time.

Seymour Duncan Announces The Duff McKagan Signature PJ Pickup Set!

I really dig that sound. Listening to the demos that are recorded direct, it sounds dark. And you'd think it would be dark from the hot pups with 1 being noiseless. But grinding thru an amp like in the Duff demonstration above it sounds pretty bad ass. The QP P bass is big and fat, has the P...

The pros & cons of alder?

    No good? 😄

The pros & cons of alder?

Pros of alder: inexpensive and balanced. Cons: can be on the middy side like mahogany. But it doesn't bother most people.

The pros & cons of alder?

I made a jazz strat out of a maple body and maple/rosewood neck and it was in no way shrill. It felt like playing a stone because of the stiffness of the wood made the attack and sustain so solid. But it was not overly bright at all. Had that characteristic maple snap but not shrill.

The pros & cons of alder?

Poplar is pretty rough. I wasn't able to use it at all.

    Basswood as a Stratwood

Maybe that's how your brain works. :P

    Basswood as a Stratwood

Basswood sounds incredible to me for Strats. It has lower density so has a characteristic resonance. Has pretty good foundational bass, and then is sparky on top. The top end sounds different than harder woods like ash, swamp ash, alder, or maple, which do have mids yes, but are crisp. Basswood...

    HSS, matching coil-split JB levels?

Nice, that'll be solid and predictable. The JB and stax are both dark so 500k is good unless you want darker.

    HSS, matching coil-split JB levels?

You could do that. The only 2 theories are either volume balance, or how stratty you want the tone. Putting the classic in the middle will be less balanced volume wise but will have more classic cluck. The Custom in the neck could be good if you want it to be fatter, but it introduces more mids...

    HSS, matching coil-split JB levels?

    A mini humbucker

    HSS, matching coil-split JB levels?

A mini in the neck strikes that middle ground - sounds nice and stratty clean, but is real raspy with gain. So you can have both if you want. Then leave the middle pickup a strat for notch tones. JB is one of the better humbuckers for splitting in the bridge. It balances well volume wise...

    JB2 parallel - almost perfect.

My best aired JB I ever created was a JB/Seth hybrid. The Seth matches the JB's natural grind and honk perfectly but makes it more precise and drops the output. Imo sticking with series sounds better than parallel. Give it a try. I could even sell you a coil or probably the whole pup.

    My first EP

Trad jazz EP I made with me on vibraphone, digital piano, and midi bass, plus 1 track with organ. The 2 with drums are bass and drums backing tracks from Open Studio. They're jazz tunes, not originals. 4 by Thelonious Monk and 2 standards. https://soundcloud.com/alhaig4736/round-midnight...
