This has probably been discussed before but I wonder if anyone can point to some specific songs with what you would consider "the JB tone."
I always see references to hair metal but a lot of that is Super Distortion and I don't really know specific artists or records that are definitely JB...
I've been listening to a lot of 1960s garage rock lately, and while listening to two songs with bright, shrill lead tones ("Psychotic Reaction" and the Kinks' "Milk Cow Blues") I wondered why are the lead tones of that era often very thin, bright, and sometimes shrill?
In the past I always...

I have "Three Strange Days" by School of Fish stuck in my head and I'm trying to figure out what effect or effects is/are used on the trippy riff that repeats throughout the song.
Is it just really heavy eq? Some fuzz? Oddly cocked wah?
It's a little hard to tell...
Years ago I bought a Squier SP-10 at a garage sale for $6. Thing is, it actually sounds really good clean: full and sparkly. Great for jazz (which I do not play) and for rockabilly if you throw a delay in front of it.
BUT...as soon as I put any distortion or overdrive pedal into this thing it...
Gotta be double cream!
I had a Super Distortion in this guitar and it was seriously bloated and dull. (I like the Super D in other guitars, but not this one!) So I swapped it out for a 9k handwound paf-style with a roughcast A8 magnet. That pickup was a bit bright in the guitar I pulled it from...
The rhythm guitar sound in the song "Balls to the Wall", is that a Tube Screamer into a Marshall?
It sounds so good, but metal (even old school metal) isn't my thang so I don't know what makes it. Heard it again today and suddenly realized I might be hearing the TS into Marshall tone everybody...
Is it safe to assume all Dimarzio Super Distortion humbuckers sound the same? (Recent ones, not vintage.)
I figure they are all wound by automated machines with very tight tolerances, right? Or could you get one that is bassier or more bloated than another?
So i got a pretty good deal on a minty MXR M77 Custom Badass Modified OD.
I was hoping it would sound exactly like my MXR Classic Overdrive/GT-OD with the added bass control but it doesn't. Not quite, anyway. Less volume, for one thing.
So...anyone else rocking this little gold gem? What...
How would you approximate the guitar sound on the opening riff that repeats throughout the song?
Delay? Hollowbody guitar? Weird amp settings? Obscure dirt box? Bridge or neck pickup?
It's kinda vaguely similar to Tom Petty's "Running Down a Dream" so there is that clue.
I had not heard this...
Short version: I was gluing the bridge back on a cheap acoustic guitar today and the top layer of wood is SUPER soft. Like balsa wood soft. Shaving it level with a wood with a chisel was like ing cheese. But the next layer down is like real wood. Why would they do this? It is a cheap Chinese...
I asked this question a while back regarding true bypass pedals but I just got a buffered one and I just want to double check: leaving the one-spot plugged in and the pedal plugged in for days at a time = okay?
I have the adapter plugged in to a power strip and sometimes forget to turn it off...
Just heard "Alright Now" on the radio and realized the solo, which I have always liked, seems pretty wet with reverb.
Anyone hip on studio recording tech circa 1970 who might know what they probably used for that reverb sound OR how to cop something similar in this day and age?
Is there a pedal that does not lower the volume of your guitar but does sort of clamp down the signal in a vaguely natural sounding way? So when strumming each strum would sort of stand out.
Like one strum would be like Xx. instead of XXXxxx..., so you'd hear Xx.Xx.Xx. instead of XXXXX if you...

Re: The weird pedal you can’t live without
I like this thread - keep 'me coming!
For a couple years I used one of these as a fuzz. All controls cranked = massive gain/smooth sustain and highs knocked off:
Then I got a different amp and decided I...
