Yeah, they make their own. Ernie Ball, GHS, DR, LaBella, Thomastik, and D'Addario (who OEMs Fender's strings, now). StringJoy, too, but they're much smaller.

IIRC, Mike "Puisheen" Adams put a nylon washer under the nut on the bottom but also put a second nut to lock the first one in. You can set your tension by how much pressure is on the nylon washer and then lock it in.

Isn't that what PRS does? You could also do what Dimebag did on the neck pickups of some of his guitars: remove the screws from the one coil leaving only the slugs.

Re-biasing would only change so much. You're working with the larger transformers from a 100 watter for both power (higher current handling) and output (straight-up larger iron that doesn't saturate when pushed by only two EL34s).

The el cheapo humbuckers that came in my wife's Squier Bullet Mustang actually sound really good! I gave the thing a good setup and tested it out through my rig and the guitar just sounded really nice!
