Need a little advice on prospective odd amp purchase

Found two potential "amps" locally. One is a Shure Voicemaster that is supposedly 400 watts and has two 5' tall speakers with it. The second is a Bogen MX60a that hasn't been turned on in 20 years. I don't know if the Bogen works or not. Given the gut shots I see on the Bogen, it looks like...

Traded my Holy Grail even for a Verbzilla today

Met a cool 16 year old guitarist who wanted the Grail over the Verbzilla he had. I brought him the power adapter for the Grail and we parted ways after talking gear for a bit and then I went to Northern Tool & Supply and shopped for tools and a trailer hitch for my truck. He seemed like a nice...

What is this 60's era Gretsch worth?

Looks like Brian Setzer's autograph on it. It's in LA BTW for anyone who may be interested. CORRECTION - NOT 60's ERA. It's apparently from the 70's given the model number. Looks like the 136th instrument made in January of 1976 given the serial number.

Blackout Modular Preamp is in my SSS strat

I have one fairly traditional strat loaded with Area 58's and one that has noiseless single coils in it from Bill Lawrence (the L200S Neck, L280S Mid and L290 Bridge). Though I was happy with the tone of the L290, I felt that the whole guitar could use a bit more output and I wanted a change...

Add me to the list of Pedal Power 2+ devotees

Mine arrived on Monday, but I didn't have time to mess with it due to having to work on my Nephew's birthday present into the wee hours last night. Tonight was his birthday party (sort of) and I went home at 10:30 to finally get that sweet piece of gear out of the box and hooked up finally. So...

Big Muff Pi w/ Tone Wicker

Man am I digging this pedal. I've always wondered how Kim Thayil got the sustain and sweet woman tone he did on "Rusty Cage" and now I know. He had to have used a Big Muff. I'm sure there are other ways, but none that are as surefire as using a big muff and a neck pickup. You get the...

Tried out the Area 58 noisless strat pups...

I bought a complete set to try out. Thus far I'm liking them. They sound pretty darned good at first blush. Mounted them with the "v" shaped portion of the pickup facing the bridge and the taller pole pieces are on the side of the heavier strings (the low E etc) instead of the lighter...

New Pedal Board Day - Part II

Sorry for the delay in getting this to you folks. I was just a little impatient in getting what I could out there to show off a little of what I had done. THIS is the cool part IMHO. Still not all that cool yet is it... See how the pedal board is mounted on hinges that have been...

NPBD - New Pedal Board Day

I'm giving you a sneak peek at my almost completed pedal board. I'm showing you the board itself first to give you an idea of how it will be set up. It's a slanted dual deck affair with room enough to hold 12 pedals of standard size. Please note that not all the pedals you see will be used on...

Thinking of picking up the Tone Wicker Muff

For the record, I'm not going to buy one looking for crunchy tones. That isn't what fuzzes are good for IMHO. They are good at taking a very focused kind guitar sound and turning it into a loose and indistinct almost keyboard-like tone. Very different than most of the tones I have in my rig...

    Finally ordered my pedalboard case...

I've been eyeballing a cheap DIY pedal board case for a while now. I haven't ordered it yet because I just haven't had the time or the extra funds to purchase it (even though it was cheap). I finally found a couple on the web for cheap enough that I bit and paid the extra in shipping ($19 in...

    Hat's off to Kevlar3000 - Our resident amp-archeologist.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I get to live vicariously through Kevlar3000 in his amp hunting expeditions. He knows a guy somewhere who has this incredibly obscure piece of amp history from the corner of leo-fender's armpit and then next thing you know the darned thing is sitting...

    Modding on the ole Fabtone

I've got my old metal case Fabtone out and I'm going back over some of the previous mods to this pedal and I'm thinking really hard about adding some additional mods to it. This pedal has WAY too much treble and the treble control almost needs to be dropped to the minimum setting to do any...

    Bi-Amping jumpered Edana with 2204

I know I'm still in the honeymoon phase with my JCM-800 2204, but man this thing sounds incredible with the Edana cranked up right beside it. Those huge KT66 tubes throw out a large amount of bass and the EL34 tubes have that unmistakable growl to them. Together they sound like the most...

Cleanup of the "farm fresh" 2204 (large pics)

I took a few pics of the guts and the cleanup process of the 2204. This thing was pig-anus nasty on the outside of the chassis and the tolex. I mean it looks like it was in a pigeon coop or something. Lots of work and more than a little purple power went into getting as much dirt out as is...
