Thanks - glad my post helped you! I tried a Seth A5 last night, and it was also pretty sweet. Not quite as fat and warm as the A2P/A5, but it had a really even frequency range without being bland or flat.
Interestingly, after all my experimentation I tried one thing I never tried before, and it is now my solution. It's a plain old Jazz neck pup! I'e owned a Jazz for yeas and never installed it - figured it would be thin and bright. Well, it's bright but it has balls too! It's everything I thought the Pearly Gates would be, based on Duncan's description of the PG.
The A2P/A5 is still, overall, my favorite of all the combinations I tried. But in this particular guitar I want a really cutting tone in both positions, but with sweet highs, lots of midrange warmth, and moderate but tight lows. The Jazz stepped up on those counts. But normally I go for a fat, warm, smooth, slightly darker tone, and the A2P/A5 really delivers.
Good luck -let me know how it goes!
