We had a Bluegrass/Skiffle artist over here in the 50s called Lonnie Donegan. I couldn't turn the tuners by hand so used a pair of pliers until it sounded a bit like him!!!! 
Got a full set of strings on my 8th birthday. Played guitar in a 4 piece for 10 years in the 60s. Sometime in the 80s I switched to classical but I'm back now playing whatever they want wherever they want it and it's great.
