It's Official: Placed Order for Custom Orpheo Bass Guitar

Some points from me, who made it. To make the bass light without chambering, was a challenge. I opted to go with superlightweight tuners and saddles, and cut the cavities quite deep, but that only helps you a bit. The neck was fine being thin. The body has a spanish cedar body back which is...

    Middle Humbucker for an HHH

For a middle humbucker, gosh. I've experimented for years with that. Posted about it a hundred times as well. The best option to my ears was a simple, classic SH2n, and then never on full blast but always with only 1 coil engaged or fully parallel for singlecoil kinda sounds. So, I had it...

Anybody tried the Mesa JP-2C (John Petrucci signature amp)?

I cannot stand Mesa's for their high gain tones. Not under my fingers. Too gritty, not enough saturation. Very 'dry' feel and sound. I can't understand how others make use of it. I love it for medium gain and clean tones, but I don't "live" there musically speaking.

    50th Anniversary JB/Jazz

The concept set is what the JB/Jazz wants to be. I have it in a guitar and it's amazing. The JB/Jazz flavor is there, but without all of its sharp edges, without the nastiness in the upper mids, the honkiness in the lows, the shrillness in the highs. The basis is there, yes, but so different...

SD "Mortal Coil" 3-Voice Active Humbuckers....Say What?!

yes. it's plinky and ploinky and it robs sustain, oompf, power. i HATE the thing. For what it's worth, I LOVE the OFR. I have compared it against the hipshot fixed bridge and hipshot trem, and I love the tone of the OFR and honestly, I prefer it with a long skinny block, as long as it can...

SD "Mortal Coil" 3-Voice Active Humbuckers....Say What?!

I see not many have replied to your question. You can absolutely bend on an Evertune. The bridge has 2 zones, one where it just holds the pitch and the other where it holds it kinda but allows you to bend. I HATE the Evertune because it sounds like shit. That's the benefit of Arium of Aristides...

    Speaking of Zephyrs...

From what I understand, yes. Silver wire is used to make electromagnets that are extremely strong. I know that there are extreme MRI machines that use silver wire.

What makes this a $2,700. Guitar?

it doesn't even have a top. it's just a slab of ash carved with a forearm contour.

Lessons learned in my first week trying to build guitars

Let's assume you're going to make the most simple of necks. Make sure the neck is level. At least the front part that will get the fretboard. the bottom part is not nearly as important. Lay down the length of the trussrod out on the neck blank. Take into consideration the headstock's length...

    minimum viable luthier tools

If you buy your lumber from places like stewmac you can get away with not having a planer, thickness sander, etc. What I think you do need: * versatile router that has various collets in various sizes. I use a Festool 1010 for 95% of my work, and it takes a 6.35mm (1/4 inch) and an 8mm...

    Speaking of Zephyrs...

they can't do parallel axis zephyrized bobbins. already asked. I have a set of JB/jazz zephyrs. They are very good. but are they worth a grand? No. The Concept set is just as good. it's more a case of bragging rights than anything else.

Lessons learned in my first week trying to build guitars

To program a cnc program for just 1 guitar is insanity, but if you do the same many times, it does pay off. Even if it is just the contour of the body and the neck pocket and bridge. Pickups can be done later if need be. Inlay, same story. It just makes life a bit easier and more consistent.

Lessons learned in my first week trying to build guitars

A CNC in combination with skill is a killer combination. If I had the space I'd have top of the line machines (bandsaw, tablesaw, oscillating thickness sander, and a vertical band sander), plus a 2HP 3 axis CNC, for inlays. but I would never have a CNC do everything. Where's the fun in that...
