So, I'm trying to troubleshoot a Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar bass. As near as I can tell, something seems to be wrong with either the pickups or the Bass Boost thing they've got going on. No sound comes out of the bass unless you have the string pressed to the pickup before releasing it...
