Have an SG with 8.0k alnico 2 P90s in the neck and bridge positions. The neck is too dark, muddy and overpowers the bridge pickup. Will an alnico 3 mag swap in the neck pickup cure this or am I better off getting a lower wind say 7.0k A2 pickup for the neck position?
Looking for a vintage output humbucker set that is
forgiving
smooth/fat
slightly compressed
good sustain
punchy
I know I can get those qualities in a high output pickup but I also want a pickup that cleans up well with the volume knob and still retains an fairly open and articulate sound...
Been searching various threads on degaussed magnets. In general does degaussing a magnet flatten out the eq in addition to weakening the strength?
Alnico 2 degaussed: looses some of the mid bump and gets slightly brighter?
Alnico 5 degaussed: looses some highs and lows and gains some midrange?
Curious if anyone has tried any of the following in a Slash set:
Roughcast Alnico 2
Degaused Alnico 2
Alnico 3
Alnico 4
Overall, I am interested in pushing the set toward a more vintage tone. Thinking pickup covers might help with that as well.
Guessing the A3 would sound nice in the...
Looking at this older pickup comparison chart the specs are 7.92k neck and 8.53k bridge

I have the Antiquity JB/Jazz set in my mid 80's Norlin Les Paul Std. (solid mahogany body/neck, no sandwich, thin maple cap, Schallers, lightweight Gotoh tail, short shaft 500k audio vol pots).
For whatever reason in this Les Paul the Antiquity JB only keeps up output wise with my P90 loaded...
Anyone compare an SM-1 to an Antiquity II Firebird?
I'm guessing the SM-1 is wax potted and the Antiquity is not. Ant should also have aged magnets. Other than that what are the differences in output and tone?
I have a 1984 Les Paul Standard. I'm the original owner, the guitar came with Shaw's which I took out and loaded with Duncan JB/59 in the early 90's.
Recently I decided I wanted a more traditional Les Paul tone.
The JB: cleans are kinda lack luster no longer care for the mid spike
59 neck...
Picked up a MIK thinline hollow body Washburn J9. Build quality is very fine, pretty sure it's from the Samick factory.
Figure I may as well put some new pups in and replace the pots/caps.
I have some 70's Gibson T-Tops I could throw in but I've also been thinking Duncan Seth Lovers

I've got the neck pup slightly sunk into the cavity and I've raised the pole pieces up so they are about a 1/8" away from the...

It's time to buy a new computer for multi-use work/media/play
I also want to put away the cassette 4 track and join the current century.
