I have tried that too. The hexes I have didn't make a whole ton of difference. I got them off ebay. I don't think they're far off from what Duncan uses, though. They say YFS on the top.

With 250K pots, I wouldn't worry about a humbucker getting obnoxiously bright. That being said, high-mid tone sounds like a job for the Pearly Gates, indeed. I wouldn't discount a Phat Cat either.
