People mix V30's (100dB) with T-75's (97dB) all the time, so it works... for some people. One pair is always dominant, though. I remember once I brought my Marshall 1960 to practice. It was loaded with Creamback H75's and Relic 30's (back when I hadn't made up my mind about mixing speakers)...

I would think if it was a special JB, they would make mention of it like they do with their '59 models.

I've tried it some time ago. It's kinda the opposite of what I want right now. The A8 seems to broaden the lows. The highs too.

Neither have I, and do prefer mid-forward pickups too. I was more addressing the post before mine. Like yeah... I suppose a 'Winter has more mids than probably any of the Custom family members or most of the low-wind PAF-types if that's one's point of comparison. But to me, it's just voiced...

Nice writeup! To add to the discussion, I love the BW, both Blackened and normal. The thing is with the mid-focused Duncans is they're usually voiced "right" in the mids. They're mid-forward, but they're not vocal, nasal, or have that "cocked wah" sound that some DiMarzios can have. At least...

My MIE Greenbacks are actually brighter than my MIC's. I prefer that, personally. They sound more aggressive and mic up better.

Depends on what 6CA7's you're using too. If you're using current production, I think EH's are known to be more "authentic". I think JJ's are supposed to be more like 6L6's wired to function as an EL34 replacement, rather...

Yeah, I didn't love the Custom either. I liked it. It had some redeeming qualities. I just didn't think the scoopy nature and the big bottom end lent itself to downtunig. If you didn't like the regular Custom, I don't know how much you'd dig the 5. It's not dark, but the voicing of the high-end...

Well, Gary Holt used the Custom before going EMG, so I'd start there. Also, consider the Black Winter and the Gibson 500T. I absolutely loved them in my Les Paul. Much better than I liked the Custom too, honestly. Other than that... you know, the JB is sounding really good in mine in Drop C...

They used the XXX cab for an Arch Enemy record that sounds great. I think it was Khaos Legions? Or was it Rise of the Tyrant? Probably Khaos since Rise doesn't sound all that great. They did use an odd mic for that one, though, not the typical 57. And the tone on that record is kinda brighter...
