I remember my Classic+ distorting when it was too close to the strings, I mean serious distortion like I had an overdrive pedal going. It could simply be a case of backing the pickup off, scratchy might mean, fuzz or grainy.

Mine are 4-wire, I would give that a try before spending $50

If you do not like that woodiness you should try the Tone Speak Birmingham. Like a GB but they do not break up as quickly so that woodiness is not there. The have more focused tight bass and are very clear and articulate without sounding sterile. It has that GB character but a more modern focus...

If you are looking for Dan Auerbach tones I just picked up a Hiwatt Fuzz for $85 USD. The filter switch will really get you some wild fuzz tones.

Try the Dunlop Delrin picks much harder on the attack and they last forever.

I am going to take the covers off. If they are not potted, I might leave them off. I plan on hitting them with some paint stripper once they are off to avoid getting scuff marks on them.
