An earlier thread got me wondering: how does everyone approach their basic tone shaping? Do you take things from the ground up, as in running tone-shaping pedals into an amp that may or may not already be distorted, where each component of comp / boost / drive / input combines into the sum...

Do you do this? Use some kind of device or material to deaden string vibration between nut and tuning machines. If so - what is your preferred method?

True statement? Outside of a general setup, string brand, etc., is there any single modification you find preferable on every single guitar you've had? Something like "I use heavy strings so I always have to file the nuts" or "I love the Pearly Gates so much that I put it in everything" or...

One SD production pickup - any style, position, humbucker or single or anything - to go in every guitar you will ever play until the end of time... No custom shop, no shop floor, no modding. You dabbled in Santeria, ticked off a brujo, broke a mirror, and some old lady threw a chicken at you...
