    unpotted

If you are playing live with tons of gain, Unpotted pickups will squeal like a banshee! However, for home digital recording applications, they are perfect. A while back, I was talking to Brandon Ellis about pickups and he actually orders his pickups unpotted for his guitars that don't see...

    Are high output pickups outdated?

I have found over the course of the past few years that high-output ceramic pickups are definitely not my thing anymore. The Duncan Distoriton to be specific, its all fizz with a high-gain head. With that said, high output pickups sound really good with something mid gain, such as a JCM 800 or...

Duncan Thrash Factor and Alex Skolnick?

I have a Thrash Factor in a LP Standard-its more akin to a stamped sticker (JBJ) era JB than the current model as it has less honky mids.

What's the next 50th Anniversary release?

I have an 84 Explorer in the shop currently that is getting a "The Mag" put in the bridge (the secret Hetfield pickup). I will let you know when i get it back what it sounds like.

Low and medium output pickups for metal

It is supposedly based on a slightly under-wound JB that Mustaine had in his Jackson V. Take that with a grain of salt, but SOME call the JB medium output. Agree, Custom is definitely more hot with the ceramic mag than the Custom 5.

Low and medium output pickups for metal

Also to add, the Slash 2.0 is a solid pickup set, a little on the dark side, but it can definitely pull off some good classic metal (Maiden and Priest for sure!). The 80s 59 set in my 78 LP Standard has great tone and can also handle some classic metal. Not quite enough punch or grind for thrash.

Low and medium output pickups for metal

in recent years, i have gravitated towards medium Alnico 5 based pickups for metal. I currently play in a thrash band. The guitars i use all have different medium output Duncans: Parallel Axis, Full Shred, Custom 5, Custom (the only Ceramic mag pickups I like anymore), Hyperion, and Thrash...
