This is a common problem with Hotrods and mine is no exception. Because I really have no use for the gain channel (it sounds awful to me), is there a way to cut it out of the circuit and have nothing but clean?

They use ceramic mags -- which makes you wonder why DM calls them "Vintage", but hey. Got someone with a couple of these he wants to replace and I'm trying to find out if they are traditional Firebird construction (2 magnets IN bobbins) or just steel blades in the bobbins with one magnet below...
