  • Less is more - super minimal stereo live rig

    I've finished the pedalboard for the incoming tour. I've been using live a single AMT preamp with its dedicated cab sim out for a looong time. My updated rig now runs in stereo. The forward mixed L/R guitar track and the solo for this alien language song playthrough are all coming from the doormat. There is no processing on the rhythm guitar part, only the solo got a compressor, some low cut and echo on the DAW level. It is pretty much what our sound guy does for solo parts live.

    Signal flow:
    Sterling SUB AX4 (stock) ->
    Shure GLX-D wireless/tuner ->
    Digitech DROP ->
    TC MIMIQ doubler -> ->
    AMT M2 left and AMT P1 right through their cab sim outs ->
    ART dPDB DI box out to whatever
    Palmer PWT05 MK2 PSU = all the juice

    There is some minimal phase shift phenomenon during the MIMIQ operation as you can hear but in a live situation it is even much less noticeable.

    Are you the only guitar player in the band?
    Who took my guitar?

      No, this band has an another guitarist, it's just my side of the coin. When I play with them I just shoot the M2 side into the PA. The P1 side is engaged when I play with the other 3 bands where I'm the only guitar player or record these playthroughs.

          I just used two half-stacks back in the day, a JCM800 or 900 on my side of the stage and the other Marshall or a Laney AOR or Peavey 5150 on the opposite side. I just tried to re-create this rig in a matchbox size. It works surprisingly great onstage.

          Apart from their character differences:
          M2 cons: much lower noise, more articulate, functional clean mode
          P1 cons: higher gain, more punch, more sustain

              Hey, I just noticed you are using The Drop. Are you using it in this video and how?

                It is bypassed for this video. I engage it onstage only.

                All bands where I play are tuned elsewhere so instead of keeping a main and a spare guitar gig-ready per band I just have two during the same period of time and I use that certain couple in all of the bands. My fav strings are hybrid lights and fav tuning is drop-D that I just step it down with this pedal where it fits the base tuning of the actual band. Extremely practical little pedal, it spares me an ample of money on strings. Other than that I prefer playing the same guitar (or two) for a couple of months to change from band to band, gig to gig.
