  • The Well XVIX: Hot Grits says it's too drunk to be this early...

    Alright, good people.

XSSIVE has kindly asked me to take over the reigns for the coming week. Sounds like a fun time to me.

Questions of a serious and ridiculous nature are actively encouraged, and I'll let the admins decide how far we can lower the tone...

A quick bio to bring you guys up on the basics:

I live in Auckland, New Zealand with my girlfriend and 9-month-old kitten. I grew up the youngest in a family of seven, with four brothers and two sisters, all of whom are quite a bit older than me. Started playing guitar when I was twelve, and quickly became obsessed with everything to do with it, practicing endlessly in a desire to become the next big shred dude. I had a lot of chops, but wasn't very musical.

Around the end of high school, my interests drifted more towards drinking and chasing women. After a couple of years of general carousing and menial labour at an art supply warehouse I decided to follow my social circle and pursue higher education, eventually graduating with a degree in communication studies, majoring in multimedia. Shortly after I was employed as a web designer for a software company specialising in CRM, where I worked until going out freelance just over a year ago.

Over the period of time I was studying, I started to get back into bands. After a few years of jamming (often hilariously) with the wrong dudes and going nowhere, I gave up. Shortly afterward it was suggested that I put a band together for my birthday party. Lo and behold, a seven piece band fell out of the trees. Ain't it always the way?

-Anyway, we played, had a ball, and kept going. That band turned into The Hot Grits, an 11 piece afro-soul orchestra. The Hot Grits is now about to release it's second record, entitled 'it's too drunk to be this early'. We're in the process of signing to a local independant label, shooting a video and organising a touring schedule that will see us playing nationwide (which, being New Zealand, is equivalent to touring, say, California).

I also play in The Defendants, which is a four piece that sounds like the Brit end of 70s rock. There's also a bit of Detroit influence, and things can get a bit stoner at times. I'm currently laying down overdubs and solos for what should be a full-length album release for later this year.

On top of that, I'm gearing up to be involved as backup for a very talented female singer-songwriter friend. my job will be to add atmosphere and twang around the edges. Think tweed, bigsby, trem and reverb...

I love all kinds of music, and the arts in general. Outside of creative pursuits my main interest is football (the world kind). I'm a lifelong supporter of Liverpool FC, and I play seven-a-side in summer (no more winter while I have three bands).

    so that covers the basics.

    let's have at it...

        Simple: all of em!

-It's hard to pick sides when you're a graphic designer. I do have more interest in pink that your average straight guy, though. I blame those late 80s Kramer ads on the back of Guitar Player...

I need a new cell phone.

Should I get the Nokia 6085, or the 6555?

6555 all the way. That cool clock on the front face reminds me of the kinds of watches adult dudes used to wear when I was a kid.

In fact, I say take full advantage by velcroing it to your wrist. That sure beats a belt clip (not that those aren't sexxxxy too).

I fully endorse your decision to go Nokia, too. Good phones.

-I like them all, but if I had to pick one I'd say Randy. Jake is severely underrated and Zakk was really cool on the second record he did with Ozzy, but I still like 'tribute' better than any other Ozzy solo recording. I remember being lent a cassette of 'tribute' and being really taken with Randy's playing, sort of a more structured, 'Euro' take on Ed's thing.

To be honest, it's a bit of a shame that George Lynch and Ozzy didn't end up working out. That could have been very cool...

At the moment, Vans slip-ons in grey tartan, camo and a sort of pacific island tapa cloth print.

                    Nope!

-I've not been to the states, yet. It's an ambition of mine to get over there sometime in the future and tool around for a while.

At this point, the only grits I've eaten are of the microwave variety. It sort of reminded me of porridge crossed with sandpaper. I'm sure the real thing is a lot better.

So where's the connection? -it comes from a Rufus Thomas song called 'funky hot grits'. Unfortunately no youtubery exists of this soul classic, so you'll have to make do with this excellent example of the man at work:

What's your favorite Duran Duran song?

Have you ever had a new wave hairstyle or a rat tail? Bonus points for bleached bangs.

If you could be a cross between any 5 players and absorb all the skills that all 5 have EXACTLY, who would they be?

What's your least favorite popular pointy axe, and if you could own any pointy for life, which one would it be?

Dude, I soooo wanted a rat's tail, but my parents weren't having it. The most New Wave I got was about three years ago, when I got a mullet, and dyed it red, black and blonde. I was thinking 'tortioseshell', and it came out more 'Japanese exchange student'. Kind of pre-emo, almost. Yikes.

Jeff Beck: for his incredible dynamic range. He can go from whisper to obnoxious in a split second. So much control, and yet a raw edge.

Greg V (Nashville session guy, check out the victoria, bogner and swart sites for examples of his work): I love his great feel and ability to build textures and create music that feels 'widescreen'.

Brett Garsed: Holdsworth lite. I've been doing the pick and fingers thing for a while, and over the last year I've been studying what he does and absorbing what I can. The thing I like best about him is that his lines aren't just stuff that falls into that 'easy to play fast' pattern mentality. It's more about hearing something in your head and going after it. His slide playing is sick, too.

Brent Mason: Another pick'n'fingers dude. Similar, but adds serious jazz and country chops to the mix.

Leo Nocentelli: for that perfect behind the beat feel, and the ability to play the simplest, most perfect part.

I'd be in pretty good shape with all that at my disposal. But really all I need to know is when to play the right thing. That's the challenge in front of any player once they can play a little.

All the BC Rich stuff is pretty hideous apart from the ones Joe Perry used to use in the 70s. Does a Gibson Explorer count as pointy enough? -every Explorer I've played has sounded great. If not, probably Reverend's Volcano:

Auckland! -and it seems like they get hotter every year. I think it's just I'm getting older and dirtier. It's also the fact that one-third of the whole country's population live in Auckland. Auckland is also the most ethnically mixed city in the country, so you see a greater variety...

Wellington girls also have their own thing going on: lots of smart girls with distinctive looks who do interesting things. Auckland girls can be a bit more yuppie and uninteresting. Outside of those two towns, pickings slim out fast.

It is true what they say about sheep: they are VERY SEXY.
