  • "Aftermarket/Boutique" Amp Companies

I don't know if the term "Aftermarket/Boutique" is suitable, I just don't know what word I could use to describe them. Call it a lack of a better word syndrome. My other thread got me thinking. What are some companies that we're big but faded away in recent years or still going strong. I would like to keep this to companies off the norm. Mainstream amp companies like Fender, Marshall, Mesa, Peavey need not apply.

    Here's what I got so far;

VHT/Fryette - Both are still making amps, VHT went down hill when Fryette established his own company.

    Madison - Out of Production

    Framus - Out of Production

    Diezel - Only in Germany

    Bogner - Still going strong

    Splawn - Still going strong

    Soldano - Still going strong

Just trying to think of amp companies and their trademark series.

Fryette has Deliverance, Sigx and Pitbull
Framus had the Cobra and Dragon
    Madison had the Divinity

      What's an "aftermarket" amp?
      I remember calloused hands and paint-stained jeans, and I remember safe-as-houses self-belief.

I guess poor choice of words, I just couldn't think of the word to describe it. Boutique would be a better choice, but I don't really consider my VHT/Fryette amp a boutique amp.

I didn't know Framus stopped production. I figured after they dumped Dana B Goods they just had crappy distribution.

Madison was never a "boutique" company.

Once again, do not know what to call these companies. What would be a term? I don't consider Fryette, Splwan, Framus, Diezel boutique nor mainstream ala Marshall.

I think what he meant was more 'independent' amp makers.

My Peavey is an aftermarket amp. It is the one I use after shopping at Walmart.
I am so close to retirement that I could play in a band full time. All I have to do is figure out what to use instead of money, improve my playing, learn some songs, and find some other musicians more talented than me who will do exactly as they're told. .

                        Would Egnater count?

                          Re: "Aftermarket/Boutique" Amp Companies

"high end" or "boutique" can vary in definition quite a bit. I am guessing you mean high dollar/high gain amps with "top quality" components? If so, you are leaving out quite a few brands/offerings....maybe because they are too "popular"?

Mesa - popular as marshall but same quality and component class as others you've mentioned.

Hughes and Kettner - german made and expensive, so somewhat rare

Fryette - renamed VHT, nothing else changed

Deizel - still around but apparently has bad distribution

Koch - Netherlands made monsters but are really rare

ENGL - german made and expensive, so somewhat rare

Bogner - really poplular on this board but i've yet to know anyone who's owned one

                          Splawn - same as above

Budda - recently acquired by peavy and went to ****

Orange - exploded in popularity recently but many of their amps are high gain/high dollar

Soldano - not much buzz recently except for the 'jet city' stuff

Rivera - seemed like they were about to get popular a few years ago but never did

Custom audio amplifiers - John Suhrs brand that gets lots of love on other boards

Framus - german made and expensive, so somewhat rare

Bad Cat - lots of pros seem to like them although not much love here

Diamond - new company making the high gain/high dollar amps although they seem to be releasing more amps than I can casually keep track of

Dave Friedman amps - famous for modding marshalls and now has started his own line

Edit: Some of these amps are assumed to have "top quality" components due to being so damn expensive. I haven't peeked inside and wouldn't know the difference between a $0.02 resistor and a $20 resistor.

I would throw Carvin in the mix, partially.

I'm looking for the ones that are not typically in a Guitar Center. They may sometimes be sold there, but it's an amp you gotta look for.
