Re: I know I've gotten Fuzz Face Crazy!

Hey, easy tiger.... you know what my name is right?????

Anyway Joe, you've started me off now. Just been playing with the FF and Wah and it's addictive. Tried it first through the Tiny Terror and as expected it was on the dark side but in a good way, but through the Hurricane it's rock and roll... well Whole Lotta Love actually. I love it. The combo of the FF and Wah is tremendous, the Wah is so much more vocal than either my Wizard or Area51.

      Somebody say Fuzz Face?!

      I wanna play!!!!!

Fuzz boxes as a general thing and Fuzz Faces are sort of 2 different animals to me. I can get FAR more dynamic control and a wider range of usable sounds from a Fuzz Face that just any fuzz box and for me that makes a Fuzz Face king!

The Bonamassa Fuzz Face is very interesting to me because the gain is SO low...being Germanium and having an even lower than normal amount of gain makes them not very..well...fuzzy but the tone is pretty cool.

The EJ is pretty high gain for a Fuzz Face but not out of what could have been found in some vintage units.

The EJ and the JH are both Si and both in the range of vintage correctness but they are gonna be on opposite ends of the range of gain in Si units, the JH being on the lower side of things and the EJ being on the higher end but with that in mind they not worlds apart or anything.

So, I thought Fulltone '70 was a meticulous re-creation of Ej's favorite fuzz allready?
I just want a Silicon , and Germanium. I got the Sunface NKT275, but still need a Si, and am torn between the Fulltone '70, which is a little rattier I think, and the Dunlop Hendrix fuzz which I believe is more truer to late Hendrix. Then again, I've heard that to have all bases covered, you'll need an Roger mayer Axis/Clone..cause thats what Hendrix is said to have used from '69 onwards and in Band of Gypsies.
I also got a Hybrid Si/Ge made by 'Maxxface' that I enjoy. Also have a Tweakfuzz thats awesome.
I wouldn't call the 70 meticulous or a recreation...it's sort of based on one of EJ's Si Fuzz Face units (of which is has had and sold MANY over the years)...

The biggest thing Fuller took from that FF of EJ's was the fact that the BC-108 trannys were not matched to what would be "correct"...so the 70 has a set of trannys that is matched to that sound by being unmatched but the addition of the midrange control and other non vintage FF tweaks change the tone from what EJ's personal unit would have been.

The EJ Signature Fuzz Face was not based off any one unit but rather several units that Eric owns plus his own input as a Fuzz Face Freak not to mention the input and experience of Jorge Tripps!

Yes, the EJ is a wolf in sheeps clothing imho. People don't think of 'nasty' or 'farty' when thinking of EJ. This box really can get that going on... In a beautiful way albiet!

It's a lot of fun. I'm still very much a fuzz virgin so I'm like a kid after prom with the prom queen right now
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

The thing about EJ's use of a Fuzz Face is he only runs it into a slightly cranked Marshall and he almost always uses a Strats bridge pickup with the tone control rolled off a good bit...that gives a MUCH different sound that just plugging in and turning up!

It also helps that Eric has such a precise right hand so he can keep it very clean technique wise!

Legend of Fuzz and the Bi-Fuzz. I won em back in November. Waited till late December to see what's up. They were behind. Understandable. Then waited until early March. They forgot about me. Said they would be here in a couple weeks. Yeah. But hey. How much can I complain when it's free? I think I'll shoot em another email this week.

Got swiped like alot of my stuff did back then....
Found my fuzz joy at Foxrox...first a Captain Coconut2 that I borrowed some years ago....and now I bought the CC Hybrid and is saving for a Hot Silicon as well...

Now, it's time for the Fuzz Face Collection porn.

                    Eric Johnson

                    Joe Bonamassa

                    Jimi Hendrix

And the pedalboard with the Eric Johnson Fuzz. Also the new tuner I love, The GoGo Pedal Tuner with big screen.

Guitar > FF > Mudhoney > Clyde Deluxe > GoGo Tuner > Klon > Classic OD > Shape Shifter > Choralflange > 78 ADA Flanger > Deja Vu > Amp.
If I don't want to use any fuzz, I simply plug into the Clyde.

                      Very nice!

So, initial impressions...how much difference overall do you find between the JH and the EJ?

Looks like you're keeping the volume on the EJ jacked up hard...is the output sort of low?

Never mind the settings on any of the pedals. I took the board apart, cleaned the pedals, vacuumed the board, then braced it all down, except for the FF.

I'll give a better review of the pedals sometime this weekend. I want to wait till I can turn up the Bogner's plexi mode and run a LP and strat through it.

Joe...next time you crack 'em open check the pot values...

I know the JH uses VERY close to schematic spec pot values but there has always been rumor of an EJK FF mod that involved different pot values...I'm curious if the EJ FF has changed values or not!

I know the values of the components on something as simple as a 9 component FF can't be a big deal to reverse engineer, so I hope Dunlop isn't bothered by me posting closeups of their circuit boards.

As for pot values, do you have to disconnect them to test them?

One thing interesting to note is that one thing they all have in common is the modern barrel jacks. I'm thinking that Jorge Tripps had to explain that Dunlop has a few manufacturing aspects they're adamant on, such as using the most highly developed jacks available, so as to avoid warranty issues. To suggest something like 60's spec jacks may have been voted out, due to the advancements in jacks that last a lifetime at the lowest possible price point nowadays.
