    How does he do it? Practice. Lots and lots of practice.

    He has probably spent almost as many hours practicing as you've spent breathing.

        He did invent the slappin' and poppin', so you'd expect him to be kind of good at it to be honest...

          This takes nothing away from Larry G., but there's actually some dispute as to who was the first slapper. Chuck Rainey (Quincy Jones, Steely Dan, a bunch of sessions in NY and L.A.) was being told not to pop strings with his thumb back in the 60s and 70s.

          An example of his technique, along with drummer Steve Gadd playing a Los Angeles phone book with brushes:
