    It's the othe way round, but even that depends on the circuit in question.

        I've tried a lot of pedals for responsive/amp like distortion, just a bit of creamy broken up tube feel.The Boss Heavy Metal,blues driver,overdrive, even an old Aria distortion and the Mxr Blue box .All have differing variants on the same circuits , most pedals do anyway as someone commented earlier . Recently I picked up a mint condition ( in box ) DOD FX-50B , like the DOD attacker and a few others they made , there is just a hint of breakup and it responds proportionally to guitar volume too. They added a top boost that kicks in at the max position. It sounds great and is now on my board to be used when I want something less than my EHX Metal-Muff.

          BTW, ROG's projects have been borrowed extensively on by some of the new boutique pedal builders. There's been a lot of money made on the amp in a box designs there.
