80's metal ala Ozzy, Priest or Motorhead I say an MXR Distortion +. For all of that hairband crap Ace likes get a RAT.

Lots of great suggestions. I had forgotten about the Distortion +
Hard Rock - gain on 5 - singing about good times.

Heavy Metal - gain on 10 - screaming about something.

Crack open Ebay and look for something from Digitech that isn't a Grunge. I just saw

Take your pick. Most of them are based on the DOD 250 circuit with various bleepblorps added in for spice.

Oh hey, the DOD 250 just got reissued. Big Flannel's got one.

For Marshall emulation you have to go with Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret MKIII ,check it out!

That is actually what I used in the late 80's with my Ibanez Iceman and Randall half stack. Metal goodness.

Can't argue with the Rat period. There is an epic Rat thread on here somewhere. [edit: Click on my sig! It's from that thread]

Also - I will point out that the 5150 is probably the best/easiest modded marshall 80's sound I can think of.

I actually use either that model, or an actual Marshall mostly. And finally - for 80's metal, a DD3 is a secondary MUST have.

Or an Ibanez CS9 maybe a BOSS BF-2, I would go chorus or flange for an 80's tone before I went delay.

Well, let's really be honest; You need the Delay AND a good Chorus too!

And I am going to stop this because in three more posts we are going to be throwing out "rack" and "SPX-90" and Bradshaw….

If we're being really honest, you need a delay and a bad chorus for 80s metal.

I played metal all through the 80's and 90's without a delay. However, I concede to your call for delay seeing you are the SDUGF reining king of 80's metal.

The clean tone and lead tones of 80s metal are all delay sounds, but it's all set up pretty subtly. It sounds more like reverb, a lot of the time. Grab a Boss chorus, or really any chorus pedal without a decent 'blend' knob, you want terrible, tinny and in your face chorus.

For distortion pedal, either the RAT or an MXR Distortion+ with the controls maxed out (for the Randy Rhodes tone).
