  • Tech Question: Disconnecting One Speaker in my 2x12. Will it blow?

I am running a 100W Hiwatt through a 2x12 Fender cabinet. This is a bit loud for home use so I was thinking of disconnecting one of the speakers in the cabinet. I hesitate because I am unsure if this will result in blowing the speaker that is left connected. Does anyone here know?

    Thanks

It depends on the wattage of the speaker, the ohms and how the cabinet is wired. Short answer yes you can screw up the speaker, amp or both. But yes it can be done if you know what you are doing. 100 watts through a single 12 is still loud disconnecting a single speaker is not the answer to your problem. I would suggest a power attenuator. However, most of them are pretty expensive. A cheaper option would be to get a lunchbox amp like a Micro Terror for home practice. The cheapest option would be just turn the amp down.

If the speaker can handle the power. But you wont lose much volume. You'll just be putting all the power into the one speaker instead of splitting it between the two. You may lose a little volume due to lack of coupling of the two speakers (and maybe some power compression) but not worth it if you are risking over powering the speaker.

Ya, you wont lose much. Probably the oddest way to lower volume on an amp ive heard. I'd be more worried about my amp with impedence etc.

Honestly, 100w hiwatt for home use is just a bad idea. If you want to lower the volume though, get an attenuator.

          Too loud for "home".?
I assume the speakers are AT LEAST 50 watts each...preferably 75-100.
If your amp is too loud through Two, wouldn't it, equally, be too loud through one if your were playing loud enough to blow a 50-100 watt speaker.?
