  • Virgil Arlo pickups

Every few years, a boutique pickup company (one man operation) comes along that takes the guitar world by storm with pro endorsements or pure hype.

This year it seems to be Virgil Arlo. Maybe my computer is loaded with cookies that pull up pickup ads, but this name is everywhere.

Not surprisingly, they're expensive and touted as the best you can buy.

I have no doubt that they're a quality item.... just like countless others.

Anyone here bought Virgil Arlo pickups or contemplating it?

Virgil Arlo Guitar Pickups, considered by many to be the best Strat, Tele & P.A.F. pickups made today. Get the best Vintage Pickups for your electric guitar.

This is the first I've ever heard of them.

At those prices, they must be hand wound. And I don't mean the wire guided by hand, I mean wound by hand, as in he must not own a winding machine at all ...

Not familiar, but they are pricey.

          I'm sticking with Zhang.

i don't think they're really hand wound, there he says building and shipping to vary from 4 to 8 week, while zhang puts his actual hand winds to take some months to build let alone shipping

if you hand wind a pup, you need to do it in one shot. at least i always have. it takes a long time compared to a hand guided pup but if you stop and come back tomorrow im sure the coil would shift

I don't know about these but a while back GJ you turned me on to Chubtone pickups and they were fantastic. Sometimes the hype is real. I still have 2 63-El Gordo sets in pickguards and a 63-El Gordo and a 67 set in the shipping boxes...just in case! lol

Jeez, do they come with beer flavored nipples??? You can only re-invent the wheel so much & then it is just pure hype. I bet the real difference between their PAF's and a set of 59's or Seth's is about $400....

Just had to say that a Zhangbucker pure-handwound is one of the best humbuckers I've ever had.

You are absolutely right. But who knows what Mike would charge today? Obviously I don't know either...just thinking out loud.

Just like GJ these pickups are popping up on my computer especially on YouTube suggestions. Anyone know if you can pay google to do that and it NOT say "sponsored ad"?

I had thought about trying a set but the price...they may be great but I can call the custom shop and get what I ask for in that range or cheaper.

Mine do not take months to build, just a couple days.

i remember reading something about your pure handwounds taking some more time than normal pickups since you needed to dedicate full time when winding them or something like that
