  • 250K or 500K Pots For Apollo Jazz Bass V Set?

Hey everybody! I'm planning on swapping out the stock pickup out of my Squier Affinity Jazz Bass V. I might as well upgrade the rest of the electronics, so I'm wondering if I should get 250K pots or 500K pots to go with the Seymour Duncan Apollo set (split-humbucker set intended to fit in single-coil routs).

BTW, I plan to have it wired with a master volume knob, a blend knob, and a master tone knob instead of the traditional VVT setup.

Good idea to do the blend knob. On my bass I tried 250, 500, and settled on 1 meg volume and 500k no load tone. Max clarity and string detail but can be rolled off easily with the tone. Not brittle or anything, still sounds like a bass. It's been the only application I've found for 1 meg. If you don't want to do 1 meg, I'd say 500k.

Should I get a 500k blend pot as well?

ive used 250k pots on every passive bass ive wired up. p, j, mm pup didnt really matter. never felt the need for more high end. as far as a blend pot, id go 500k.

I have used 250k. At that point, I didn't need to try 500k, as the sound was nice and balanced on my bass. If you have a particularly muddy bass, I can see going to 500k, but if it isn't start with 250k...you might not need to change at all.

yes, using a 1meg volume and no load tone is totally wack but whatever works for you is what ya should do

A wider range of not only usable but great sounding tone wack? Strange thinking.

I’ll try 250K with a 500K blend pot and see how it goes. I definitely want to get the best of bright and dark sounds out of my bass. It's a somewhat tinny sounding bass (at least judging by the stock pickups) so who knows.

as i stated before, ive never felt the need for more high end than a 250k pot has given me. maybe i could see 500k on something really dark but 1meg and a no load? id have to keep things turned down all the time which seems wack to me. range for the sake of range when i dont find it useful doesnt make much sense to me. obviously you like it which is fine. you like what you like, i like what i like.

Yes fine. 250k works well. But it's a bass. Letting the full range of signal through doesn't overload the sound with highs like it would on a single coil guitar. I play with the pots wide open all the time and it sounds good.

Well, I received a pickup on Christmas. Unfortunatlely it wasn’t an Apollo Jazz V, I got an SMB 5a for Music Man basses. I might go a different route for now and probably put together an Old Smoothie-esque bass (positioned in the middle like a P-Bass probably).Click image for larger version
