  • Good Songs to play alone on an Electric?

    There are like 4,000 acoustic songs that are meant to be played without a band, what electric songs are like this? I like blues, preferably psyhcadelic, but any songs from the 1950s to the late 80s work.

    I'd also like some songs that sound cool on their own, Eruption is one of them. Something I can use to show off.

    Playing Hendrix “alone” is fun. Little wing, wind cries Mary etc

    To show off, Eugene’s Trick Bag.

            I’d suggest just playing songs you enjoy regardless of whether they are specifically meant for electric or acoustic or whatever.

              Yeah find songs you enjoy, that's about it right there.

              edit; Oh I didn't see the part about showing off. Now that's a whole other can of maggot larvae.

                  You need guitar parts that have both rhythm and lead, and maybe some percussive playing too. That's why Hendrix/SRV is a good bet.

                  I also recommend some Dire Straits. I always liked playing 'Wild Theme (Local Hero)';

                    Dire Straits tunes are also good to adapt too, like this guy did;

                      And only if you have a decent voice, the Buckley's cover of Hallelujah is a good one;

                        I'm not a huge jazz guy, I mean I like pretty generic jazz like Kind of Blue, etc. But it is really fun to learn a jazz song. If you learn the melody (I'm a real beginner at jazz, so I just use the Real Book) and the chords separately, and then find a way to mix them up, it's a really rewarding experience. It's also great to be able to pull one of those songs out when someone says, "yeah, you can play blues (or whatever) but can you play anything else?"

                        I also found that learning stuff like Misty or Autumn Leaves slowed me down a bit as a soloist, and made me go of bigger intervals between notes in a solo. So that was a cool side effect.
