When I was younger, 70s and 80s, you saw a lot more SGs than Les Pauls. I bet they wayyy outsold LPs back then. But I would guess after the post-Slash/LP resurgence, LPs might outsell SGs. Also the whole historic thing got huge in the 90s-00s.
I also seem to recall seeing more Les Paul Customs than Standards and Deluxes in the late 70s-early 80s, but that might be a fallacy of my (admittedly) small sample.
It would be cool to see some year by year numbers.
(I also seem to recall seeing a lot of Gibson bases in the late 70s, but that might just be that they stood out in my memory more than the ubiquitous Fenders)

Ooops. I haven't been around much. OK, without reading anybody's anything, I'd say I agree with the dude, coz Gibson said they were scaling down ("closing") to concentrate on LPs, if I remember right. Well, I guess they did. I don't think that should be their golden boy, what have you, because he's right-you'd have to stop playing, like me, (HardTail w/2 push/pull pots), to figure out all that crap. Kinda like the way they put whipped cream on top of milkshakes now. I hate that.
More succinctly, too much of a good thing?

if Gibson was building cars this is what they would look like and the price would be $63,133:
