      Some of the first 2 input amps had each input going to a different tube or different halves of one dual triode, with different tone shaping circuits on each. and they never thought that guys would wanna switch between them without plugging in a different lead

                  I love bright and normal config on pre-master-vol Marshalls, the amp sounds great when jumped.

                    Wasn't it also something to do with having electric guitars mimic the bass parts back in the 50's, due to many bass players using a double bass and not being able to keep up volume-wise?

                          One was for a Tele and one was for a Les Paul DUH....OK not true, but it actually could work that way. Depending on how old, it could have been a mic and guitar or an accordion and whatever.
