  • Pedal Priority, which would you get?

    Good day,

I'm debating on which to get first, a reverb pedal or a buffer.

I cannot realistically afford both, but can afford one or the other.

I know I need/will need a buffer, but I'm at that magic spot where I have just enough cable such that the highs are rolled off the way I like while having the low-end still be clear, but I know that it won't take many more pedals before I really lose the highs and the lows get really muddy.

For you more experienced players, which would you pick? Note on the reverb pedal, I currently do not have one and am just using the amp's reverb, which is good enough for now.

I'm currently leaning towards the buffer since I can just lower the treble on the amp and the reverb is fine and it's cheaper.

    Thanks,
    GreatOz

None of your other pedals have a buffer? Tuner, OD?

Well, I love reverb and all of the strange stuff you can do with it, so that's where I vote. I like reverb on an amp, but with the pedals, I am always trying to create new sounds rather than trying to place the sound in a bigger room.

I think one of my pedals, an overdrive, has a buffer.

That may be all you need.

          Then definitely reverb.

            Buffered reverb.

            Nailed it.
            Oh no.....

Exactly -almost every reverb pedal has a buffer. Just make sure it's NOT a true bypass pedal -so you have the buffer in both reverb ON and OFF position.

So just get a quality Reverb pedal.

In all seriousness, what buffer are you looking for and why? Just because it seems like you are about to start losing treble? Can you get a used SD-1 (if your OD isn’t buffered) to try with/without a buffer?

But a reverb, build a buffer, they’re pretty simple builds. Are you gigging? If no, go reverb.

I'm going to go with reverb, I completely forgot that two of my pedals have buffers in them.

Awesome. Want to talk about which reverb pedal since we’re here and have time?

I went with a DigiTech Polara, mostly because it's versatile and would do what I needed it to. And it was on sale for $100 new lol.

I was thinking of going with something like a Boss RV-500 or a Strymon Blue Sky, but they were outside the price range and to be honest, I don't think I would really need one of those at this time. If I need something more substantial, then I'll get something more substantial later.

                            Polara sounds good.

If you have a reverb that’s “good enough” and you don’t yet need a buffer then why spend money that you dont need to?
