  • OK - pulled the trigger...here we go! Bass head/cab

So I got a Hartke TX300. Has everything I need:

Straight in has Drive, Comp, Gain, then a shape switch, then B/M/T and a Master
On the back is an FX loop, and speaker out300 watts class D (small & light!)

I can run my Ampeg into the loop, or bass straight in, using an A/B. Then I get Hartke Sound A, Ampeg Sounds B & C + Overdrive on demand.

Bass hits a Boss Compressor and an EQ before anything.

    Now which cab???

    I have found a 4x10 HyDrive for $350 or an 4.5x10 for $300

Which would you put with that head and why?

The hydrive has a horn, correct?
If so I would go with that.

      They both have tweeters.

The HyDrive are a bit warmer sounding and handle more power. I have a 410XL with no tweeter. (The 4.5 has a tweeter)

The TX is a great head. If I was still playing bass in bands I’d sell my LH500 and get a TX600.

I doubt you’d need the Ampeg. The TX can get an overdriven tone. My LH can’t.

Cool to know. But given what you said, all the more reason to go with the HyDrive.

Yeah - seeing a lot of Hydrive love. And they extra handling and price suggest it may be the winner.

Was really hoping to find an XL 4x10 for $200...but $350 for the HyDrive is a killer deal it appears...

Honestly I prefer one 15" in my rig too (although I haven't gigged as a bassist in maybe 10 years)

because of the smoother connection of low notes due to the slower reaction of the speaker -so I would usually use a 1x15" for the smooth and a 4x10" for the punch and lows or even bigger a 1x15" and an 8x10"

BUT since you are playing up beat energetic rock n roll and using a compressor -I'd say you are fine with just 10s

but consider 15s if you start doing all ballads... lol

There will always be a Direct Out to the board going to two 18" subs.

Gigged the rig last night. It was fantastic. No time to dial in, pushed some nice tone, played nice with the PA. Worked great with a few basses!
