  • EL34, 6Ca7, E34L or KT77 for Marshall amp?

    Hey people.
I've Benn searching for replacement tubes for my marshall EL34 100/100 power amp.
The problem is that I read so much.... To much, really to much different things about tubes.

It seems (if I don't say ****), that
-EL34 II are like EL34 but with more fuller tone
    -E34L are aggressiver than EL34
-6Ca7 are not exactly only the American version of EL34.
They are more fuller, modern sounding
-KT77 can be choose to replace a EL34 but are tonaly between EL34 and 6L6... Warmer and more fender type.

I spoke with an amplifier tech. He told me that even if I take any tube, the tone Charakter of the amp will not change dramaticallynand if this is true, it will be fine for me because what I'm searching for is a replacement tube To the originals EL34 but with some little increse/decrease.

I would like to Orient the sound in a less harsh, brittle, sparkle, "to much presence" oriented sound.
In short, a little bit less marshall Charakter, a little litt less Britain amp Charakter.
    Something more neutral in short.

What could you to advice me in this case?

    Thanks for helpful advices...

    Micha

As i told you in your last thread the 9100 & 9200 are spec'd for 5881's not EL-34's.

Voicing for an amp occurs in the preamp not the power amp.

Whatever you use it won't change the tone hardly if any.

      It's not the 9200 or 9100..it's the El 34 100/100.

I just retubed my EL34 50w with 2 JJ EL34IIs. Love them! Definitely sounds fuller than the old tubes. But that may or may not be because the EL34s were old/abused. Regardless, doubt you'd go wrong trying them.

I wouldn't describe the E34L as more aggressive, but it certainly sounds bigger and more full than the EL34s I used to have in my Mesa.

If you want the best CP EL-34 that sounds fantastic, is reliable & lasts id go with the RI Tungsol EL-34B in matched quads.
Be careful what you wish for you might get it.
BTW some pic's would help us understand WTF you're talking about.

I've got EHX 6CA7 tubes in my Tweaker and they're very bright and sizzly when pushed hard compared to the stock 6V6 tubes, which is not really a fair comparison but oh well.

Love them but they're not smooth or neutral at all.

I love KT-77'S. But I've only ever used them in a class A cathode biased amp.
I would think that as long as the amp will handle the voltage that they need to be biased at, and you have it done, then they should be fine.

How do they sound comparatively to the el34 in your opinion?
                          What should I expect?

If you want slightly less presence/sizzle-and the difference will be slight- go with the Mullard reissue EL34s. You don't want KT77s for that.

                              OK, thanks, good to know.
It's something new for me. I didn't expect it exist such differences between the same tubes from different brands.
