  • The Secret To Ritchie's DP Tone

This has been one of the toughest for me to figure out... "do I need a Marshall Major?" etc..

Although there were changes to Ritchie's gear in Deep Purple over the years, the earlier tone can be had easily by:

    Strat w/ singles
    VOX AC-30 cranked
    Celestion Alnico Blues

add some kind of midrange hump (EQ or otherwise)
    mellow the high end somewhat

only the AC-30 will give you that "crang" and "clang"...

EDIT: Here's a clip - my guitar, real Paice & Glover:

I'm sure you are right. I recently read an interview in a 1970s Guitar Player magazine. He said the first tour or two with Marshall amps it was actually Vox guts in Marshall cases. He pretended to play Marshall because Vox was considered passe. Eventually Marshall gave him heads that sounded like his Voxs (Voxes?) but louder.

Was it the tape recorder that gave the mid boost or did that come later? I'm no DP expert, I just happened to have that magazine laying around.

His AC 30 tone was best with a 335, on DP's first 4 albums. His 335/AC30 tone on 'Concerto for Group & Orchestra' is some of the best live guitar tone I've ever heard.

He used BSM Treble booster with Voxes. Aiwa tape machine came later, probably first with Voxes and continued with Marshalls.

He also had his strats modified from some unknown point with extra tone circuitry.

Pickups were reverse wound, and the middle pickup wasn't in the loop (or some such thing I read).

Dawk made a Q-filter type circuit (which fit inside the pickguard cavity) for the guitar at some point.

I'll post a clip when I get around to it - using BIAS FX2 and their AC30.

The earlier tone is there in spades with the AC30 + Blues. Marshalls don't cut it.

Anyone guess what his AC30 settings were? THIS is *the* sound for me:

I believe Marshall Majors came later - in Rainbow days, and mostly for touring. He did play Marshalls with Purple - but not Majors as I understood. Not a BSM treble booster, but a Rangemaster if remember correctly. Rangemaster was a thing, Iommi and May used it too.

Sorry. It was Hornby Skewes treble booster I meant.

BSM is current company that makes copies of them.

Was Ritchie’s Strat a slab board?

I can try my Gibson CS SG w/ Seth Lover PAFs through this rig config and find out.

Quick 'n' dirty ditty through similar setup with Gibson+PAFs. Near end of the solo, I flip to neck PAF.

Different boost, the Treble Booster stomp @7

Same BIAS FX 2 amp ('66 AC Boost V2).
                          Everything cranked except
Solo guitar (right channel) treble @7
Rhythm guitar (left channel) treble @6, middle @7

Into British 30 (alnico blues) cab

                          No EQing at all.

touch of EMT140 plate w/ 100ms predelay on rhythm guitar

I like that! It doesn't have the hollowness of Ritchie's tone but I can hear the basic parts are there.

It's a warm tone with chime and grind on top... the midrange really shines. Can get liquid lead tone if pushed enough.

Yeah the hollowness is prolly the live mic'ing. I'm doing iR's, of course.
