Default Top control knobs on amps

When an amp has the knobs facing up instead of facing forward, how do you deal? Think Hot Rod Deluxe or Blues Junior, on a stand that angles the amp back.

It's a PITA. A piece of painter's tape with the knob legends helps.

I have had a marshall haze 40 combo before with knobs on top
to save space occasionally would stack other crap on top of it, blocking the knobs, helps to just dial in a lead sound with guitar on full volume and tone and then use the guitar to tweak everything from there, and pedals are out front too.
Helps if its a real set it and forget it kinda amp, but still. I'm not gigging so I can't speak to how much more a PITA that would be in the dark with people waiting on you to finish trying to adjust something, but I can imagine.

If I had to run a setup like that I would do that... get a clean or medium gain channel, set it and forget it with as much treble and gain as I could need, and start dialing it in with eq pedal on the floor, gain pedal, and guitar tone knobs

if you use the amp enough you know what is what so dont really need to see em and with the amps you mentioned, they are chicken head knobs so you can tell about where they are set. most of the time, once i get the amp set at the beginning of the gig, i dont need to mess with the knobs. sound guy prefers that i dont either it isnt as convenient as front facing but i wouldnt not get an amp just cause the knob placement

I think the original idea was that it looked better on stage (or in your music room). You don't have to see the unsightly knobs.

Originally, you put the amp in front of you, facing the crowd, because PA systems were largely nonexistent. A lot of old amps even had lettering facing that way. Now, top controls are simply a design aesthetic

Yeah, that makes sense. It also explains open back cabinets.
