  • What happened to the Fender Yngwie Malmsteen Overdrive?

Looks like nobody carries it anymore. Makes no sense. Did they find it causes cancer or something?

They probably made a limited run. A slightly tweaked 250 right?

Or a plain old DOD 250 - like YJM actually used...

Just looked - Japan has cornered the market on both the DOD and the YJM. Good news - either for 60-80 dollars if it is what you need.

Monte Allums has a fairly simple mod kit to convert the YJM308 into the 250. You need basic soldering skills, but it's not too difficult. I have one. I don't know how authentic it is because I never heard the original.

I think I will pickup up a used YJM308. And a noise gate of course.

What does the YJM Overdrive do that any other one doesn't? What's its 'thing'?

Has there been a comparison with other distortion pedals? Is it just a modded DS-1 or something?

Not all overdrive and distortion pedals sound the same. No more than we look the same. The YJM has a certain tone. It has his tone.

That it says YJM on it in Old English Script.

As OD's go, it is a non-screamer style meaning no mid hump. Also no tone controls. Pass.

As does most OD's if you don't get stupid with the gain.

Oh, I think it is a Distortion + or something. You certainly can't sound like The Viking from any pedal.

The original was the DOD OD-250. Then they came out with the YJM308 which is the same circuit board with some components changed. The Monte Allums mod purportedly puts back the original components, but changes the opamp to something "better."

No idea, I was just guessing. I don't know much about it.

Except they don't do it as good as the YJM, because of the Old English Script. I forgot to mention that...very important - the script!
