    Default How do people use looper pedals?

    Iím reading up on them, and itís mostly pretty abstract. In the practical sense, what do people use them for, and how?

    I think they're great for creating/practicing solos.

    Use them to replace those deadbeats in your band . . . like this:

    I use them 2 ways...a simple looper for practice to play a few chords, and practice soloing over it. For live playing, I don't particularly like to watch or do the 'build a song from the ground up' like KT, above. I use them to build non-rhythmic soundscapes in the back of the band. For this, I need to re-define the loop boundaries while playing, and need the ability to have 2 un-synchronized loops at once.
    The looper people I like are Robert Fripp and David Torn. The biggest thing to me, is that you can't tell how the loops are being built, what is live and what isn't, and it isn't important to me that it sounds like a guitar.

    Fripp's been doing it for ages. I watched him do Frippertronics shows in NYC back in the 70s, using reel-to-reel machines with an actual tape loop stretched between them. His piece Exposure became the bed track for the Peter Gabriel tune of the same name.

    The trick is to let it run a LONG time before you loop it.
    Johnny A is doing a bunch of looping right now, and it sounds good.

    I would have loved to have seen him at those shows. I got interested in looping after hearing Brian Eno's Discreet Music and the Fripp & Eno albums. So, to me, I am more into the atmospheric stuff. My last release was made of stuff I learned from listening to that stuff.

    I like doing the ambient pad thing. My favorite loop is a weird noise from my Bassballs and reverb pedal. If I mute the strings on my bass and strike them all with the Bassballs turned on, it makes an electronic firework noise. That plus some reverb looped is awesome for fretless noodling.

    Sparingly, in my experience. Mainly because I'm a terrible at solos.

    I don't have one, but I like it when someone uses it to demo differences between pedals.

    Now that's a whole different kind of looper. That is really a "patcher" pedal,,,,like a Boss LS-2.
    Those are indeed great for comparing pedals in a fair manner because neither get the advantage/disadvantage of extra/less buffering.

    You can also use one to play a phase over and over while you tweak setting on pedals, amp, and recording equipment.

    ^^^and to add to that;
    You can setup a series of riffs playing through one rig, and then use another rig to play the second rhythm part or leads.
    It's really fun for those of us with multiple amps but no bandmates (or friends cough cough).
