  • NMD New Modifications Day - 2016 Fender MIJ 62 Tele

On Thursday I picked up my 2016 Fender MIJ 1962 Reissue tele which has been extensively modified.
I paid £550 for this tele and then spent £340 on modifications.

First Major Modification : I’m predominantly a Metal guitar player but love playing jazz and ambient music so I wanted that classic tele tone but without the 60 Cycle Hum, so it has had the Seymour Duncan Hot Stack in the Bridge and the Vintage Stack in the Neck.
Can’t wait to try them though the rig but am loving the look of the Hot Stack in the Bridge.

The Second Major modification includes a refret with XJ Stainless Steel frets which I always go for on any guitar that I’m going to gig with and use a lot.

The third major modification shouldn’t be clear to people if it’s done well, because I’m a metal player I like having more frets than necessary, as a result I determined that 21 frets were inadequate so asked him to add a 22nd fret to the fret board so I can get that high D.

The last major modification was that the Fretboard was Re-Radius’d so now instead of a being a 7.25 inch radius it’s now a 7.25-12 compound fretboard radius.
Any and all questions are appreciated.

Great choice of pickups, and I love the binding on this. Congrats on the upgrades!

Really can’t wait to plug them in, I’m mainly a metal player who plays prog and thrash and this is setup in Drop D so hopefully they’ll keep up.

Update, just tried it through my Engl Powerball and it was glorious, still has that Telecaster Twang but just fatter and noiseless, it’s never going to be my main rhythm sound but that wasn’t the intention but for adding some clarity in multitracking it’s perfect, I love them, the clean tones are heavenly and the fuzz tones are the best of all the guitars in my collection.

Yes by a pretty large amount.

By adding some rosewood to the end of the board.

Awesome work indeed, since no evident seam is seen!

On the pickups you chose, on my ESP LTD TE-212 (Tele cnone) I had installed a Hot Lead Stack and an APH-1n, a Les Paul three-way position switch, and individual switches for each pickup for Series / Parallel / Split wiring. Some magic on the pots, allowing to select between 500k or 250k, depending whether in series or split, to try and catch some classic tones. Works remarkably with the HLStack.

BTW, how does the Vintage Stack behave?

It’s quite low output and still has a tiny bit of hum to it but it sounds fantastic.
