    Re: Punk Rawk Tonez

I usually hear some thin, wiry tones out of punk records that I like.

Did any of the big punk bands record with 2x10 cabs or something?

My guess is that it’s a mixture of single coils at really loud volumes and the the micing of the amps. I doubt a ton of time was spent on placement in most cases.

I agree with P90 pickup is easiest for this work, but any basic PAF humbucker will do.

Get a Marshall AVT 50, turn every knob to 6, except bass on 3. Done.

And as Mincer said - the attitude will force the gear to work. Punk is first and foremost attitude, then energy, then presence. The rest is whatever. Marshall whatever helps, but not necessarily.

Do what you feel and do it yourself. There are no wrong answers in punk.

Look, there is no punk rock tone. because punk embodied rebellion so as soon as proto (Ramones, Stooges) and fashion punk wore out (Bowie, NYDolls, Trex, Gary Glitter, Slade)

-then came in all kinds of movements with their own sound starting with snotty punk (Sex Pistols, Clash, Germs, Richard Hell)
Art punk (The Jam, Television, Wire, Devo. Per Ubu, Gang of Four)
Surf Punk (Dickies. Agent Orange, DK)
Goth Punk (Joy Division, Bauhaus, Christian Death)
              Anarcho punk (Crass)
Political punk (Stiff Little FIngers, DK, Clash, Fugazi, Minutemen)
Hard Core punk (Bad Brains, Black Flag, Minor Threat, GBH)
              Street Punk (Exploited, Sub Humans)'
              Horror Punk (Misfits)
Pop punk (Runaways, Buzzcocks, Rezillos, Toy Dolls, Descendents)
              Thrash (Dayglow Abortions, DRI)
So Cal punk (Adolesecents, Bad Religion, Nofx,
              Cow punk (X, knitters)
              Math Punk (Nomeansno, Ruins)
College Punk (Replacements, Husker Du, Mission Of Burma)
Noise Punk (Sonic Youth, early Jesus and Mary Chain)

etc etc etc (Of top of my head -not comprehensive) I could go on forever.

and everyone of them used different tones -there isn't a ubiquitous tone...

Punk is about rebelling -pick something that pisses you off and push it into your guitar.

Just like metal or any other genre really as it continues to exist it gets more specialized and expansive. Love punk.

Wrong. There is a punk rock tone: my hands playing one of my guitars through my amp!

Just kidding. I think we are all saying the same thing but your list is a much more detailed (and pretty accurate) version. Just grab a guitar, turn up an amp, and GO!
