  • AMPEREX/BLACKBURN MULLARD EL-34'S/6CA7'S.

Scored a matched quad of NIB/NOS Amperex labeled Mullard Blackburn FX2 EL-34/6CA7's for an super low price. The Holy Grail of EL-34's.
Guy had bought them many years ago for a JCM-800 but never put them in, amp long gone.

Every where else wants $500 to $1K+ for a quad if you can even find them.
2 matched pairs. Should be here by the weekend.

I'll report back with the results.

Nice. How do they compare to the EHX 6CA7 I have in my Tweaker 15?
      Epiphone LP Standard PlusTop Pro
      Ibanez SZ320 / A8 DD103 bridge.
Ibanez RG270 / Screamin' Demon bridge.

      Egnater Tweaker 15 Head / Laney Cub 8 / 2x12 - Celestion V30+K100
Line 6 M13 and plenty of stompboxes I rarely use!

What are you putting them in?
Right now I'm running a JJ's 6CA7 in my Picovalve. I like it but I am curious to hear how a quad sounds in big amp. Keep us posted.

I’m running those same tubes in my Blackstar HT-20. Love them.

Nice! I've got several boxes of Mullard EL34s -at those prices maybe I need to list them

So SAYING "freakin amazing tubes" doesn't do these justice. They're like the Thoroughbred Race Horse of EL-34's. Secretariat no less. The Tungsol EL-34B's i been using last 10 years are great tubes but nothing like these. Bias on the Amperex/Mullards isn't as tight tolerance as the Tungsol but the Mullards are in a Galaxy or their own. DEAD QUIET. Almost unheard of for a 54 year old set of power tubes. I can turn up the preamp gain higher with less noise & pedals don't have to work so hard to get really good gain. Midrange out da ying yang. Chimey/shimmer/articulate as a MoFo. If you have an old Marshall or similar there is no substitute. I know most folks cant drop $500 to a Grand on a quad of power tubes but i got this quad for $300 [2 matched pairs] and it only took me 15 years of looking LOL>
No clips as of yet but take my word .............. MY WORD THESE FUGGIN TUBES ARE GOOD !

No warm up best i can do ATM as ive been asked by a ton of peeps to get something posted. Cant play at volume due to neighbors.

                        Guitar is a Gibson Explorer.

The percussive attack & articulation is unlike any power tube ive ever had.

there really is something to be said for old tubes in old circuits. i have a pair of gec kt66 that sound incredible. ive put them in a tweed bassman, 5e7 bandmaster clone, and an old 1987 head. sounded incredible! i dont know if there is as much sonic benefit to using old tubes in modern amps since they were designed around/with modern tubes but i dont play through many of those amps any where near as much so its more of a casual observation than anything else

How about a tube A/B comparison of Mullards you just bought versus a fresh set of Tungsols, Svetlana, etc etc

That would be a hot and interesting video
