Such a great video. Gold mine of info for Jose amps, very mythical with little true info.

            Smallbox is pretty innocuous.

Pete Thorn never ceases to blow me away with his soloing.

Interesting video. I always thought the tone on eat em and smile was a tad too dark or something. I used to think it was a soldano on that album cause it didn’t sound Marshally to me.

Not sure there were many, if any, Soldanos around when they made that album.

Try figuring out EE&S Vai guitar parts by ear in the early 80's on cassette. Mind blowing to say the least.
We had no net/u-tube back then Bro.

Think about it, if there were nothing for the Pro's back then i can tell you there was double nothing for us working class folks.
I toured in 3 States with a 50 watt JMP 2204, homemade cab & a guitar i made out of a Les Paul copy w/a broken Gibson SG neck.
People [especially kids] don't know how easy they have it nowdays.
Makes me sick to my stomach when i see a 9 yr old playing 30K worth of Gibson guitars & Friedman gear on youtube that daddy bought & the Dad is pimping out the kid like he's the greatest thing since Hendrix.

Like Dave said these original Jose' amps were the "Model T" of high gainers.
You really wouldn't want one except for historical reference/bragging rights.

Once you've seen a 7 yr old Asian kid play "Cliff's of Dover" note for note its time to re-assess your mission statement.

Most Vai guitar tracks for EE & S were cut in Vai's humble garage style "studio" he had at the time. And he cut the tracks relatively quick with DLR compared to today's standards.

I think the first prototypes were rolled out the following year, in 1987, so no Soldanos on that record.

Man, that amp sounds killer, though!

Cool video; especially enjoyed listening to Friedman breaking it all down.

I am subscribed to Thorn and so coincidentally saw that video a few days ago. I was really impressed with how technical it got - really shed a lot of light on exactly what Jose's mods did. Friedman did a great job explaining a very technical subject in a way that was understandable for non-engineers. Great video.

I've had an interest in knowing more details about the Jose mods since learning that James Hetfield's Marshall 1959 head used on Kill 'Em All had some Jose mods.
