  • Tweaker 40 sounds a little... off

    Good morning!

I have a Tweaker 40 head. It had a Mercury PT installed at a shop last year. I installed new power tubes and set the bias. The amplifier seems to be powerful, all the switches and knobs work fine but no matter what I do when playing with any sort of distortion it sounds like the mids are scooped, or like it is under water, if that makes any sense.

Is this something a preamp tube upgrade could cure? Is there something else I can look at.

I am able to do very basic electrical and soldering work if there is something I can add or subtract from this unit.

    Thanks for any help!

What preamp tubes are you using?

Currently I am running some ARS 12AX7 tubes in it from another parts amplifier, however they are used. They made a little bit of difference from the original preamp tubes but the gain seems both harsh and squeezed, if that makes sense.
