  • PRS SE 24 Custom vs Fender Player Deluxe HSH

I do not know if these 2 guitars have been compared on here before or not, so apologies if they have.
I'm at a point where I am really wanting to get into a great piece, for under $1000.00 budget that will really compliment and round out what I currently have. So . . . here is what I have . . . A Fender 6 string Acoustic/Electric, an RWG Les Paul set up with D'Addario .10's, and a Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz Combo, a Mitchel MD400 with D'Addario .10's and a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gate in the bridge and Duckbucker in the neck, and I have an HLK Tele with D'Addario .11's and a Seymour Duncan 1/4 Pound in the bridge and SD Tele pickup in the neck.

I have looked at A LOT of guitars, really . . . Ibanez, Fender, PRS, Michael Kelly, and Charvel and I have kind of settled into either the HSH Fender or the PRS 24 as the best 2 options for what I want.

I have listened to them both, Tom Quayle has reviewed both on Dawsons, but not side-by-side and I LOVE how they both sound, truly awesome guitars. I myself have not physically played either of them at this point, although I have held both of them at some point over the last 6 months, and I am impressed by both.

I am looking for some personal reviews, experiences with either and both of them, get some other players thoughts, opinions and as all of this "Virus Mess" hopefully slows down and I can actually get into a music store and check them out.
How does the neck feel, how are the pickups (good tones, etc.), stays in tune, great look and feel, knobs and switches feel solid.
Thanks in advance for your messages!

Edit: my bad those two you're looking at are close in scale length
I was thinking the Prs had shorter scale but it's 25 vs 25.5
    Need more coffee

The strat will give you more tonal variety with the hsh setup but fender seem to have a brighter fender tonality they try to keep when doing humbuckers so as to keep things sounding still stratty and fendery if you like that kind of thing then get the fender. The most unique tones on it will come from the 2 and 4 positions combination of the middle single and one humbucker and you may like those sounds, they're generally different from the kind of middle position you get from combining two humbucker that are spaced further apart

If you like the middle position on your Les Paul type you will probably like the Prs guitar just fine

Thanks, and Yes, scale length are VERY close, but thanks for thinking of that. I do like the Fender Single Coil Squack, but not 100% sold I can have both the throaty growl of the Hummers and the Squack from singles in the same piece. You are right, seems like 2 and 4 give the best Single coil sounds, and the bridge is definitely more throaty than the neck hummer.

Yes, it sort of does, my Mitchel is definitely a Super Strat, but set up more as a Blues Machine (Which is perfect, because I LOVE the Blues).

I was very impressed with how well the Coil Tap really thinned out and Tinned Up those Hummers on the PRS. I found a New Saphire SE 24 out of a company in Chicago for a killer price, but that trad looking quilted maple cap is beyond beautiful as well . . . hmmm . . . well . . . . lets hope I can get into a shop soon and try them both out through an amp and see how they play, feel, sound to me . . .

seems like the necks would be vastly different
with the PRS much wider than the Fender

Of that, I do not know or remember, as when I held both it wasn't in the same shop or at the same time. When I DO sit down and play them, I'll have a better idea of that.

Interesting thought, I had not even thought of that. Will music stores let you do that? Hmmm . . .
There is one of my favorite stores here locally that carries both PRS and Fender (LOTS 0f Fender) guitars . . . I'm sure I can try them both out side by side there!

most of the online retailers have a trail period
but if you can try em out in store
                      great

if not maybe they will let you mull it over at home

when I was shopping for a new bass I did this

I took an SR250 and an SR300 home
the 250 was gorgeous but 300 had better feel and set up

ended up taking both back and buying an SR500

Hahaha . . . go big or go home, eh? That's awesome! The shop I'm looking at may actually already be open, so I need to give them a call and see what they have in stock and see if I can swing by, maybe next week sometime and take a look, play a couple pieces and see what really feels good in my hands.

I'd say the PRS would give you something different. HSH Strat is going to be pretty similar to the Mitchell.

I'm leaning towards the PRS as well, I would LOVE to have a Fender Strat, but I really fell in love with how well the coil tap on the PRS gives me that single coil sound and then I can easily switch back to the meatier humbuckers on the fly.
ONLY concern now is the feel in my hands, is that neck going to be too wide/thick, IDK . . . gotta try it out.
