Default Knobs for Les Paul Special in TV yellow?

So I'm not doing well with the factory-supplied bell knobs on my Epiphone. What would be better?

What about tophat knobs with the metal inserts? I kinda like those. They seem kinda Fenderish.

Doesn't matter as long as they're black.

It's really between speed knobs and reflector top hats.

Top hats are difficult to manipulate when you need them.

So are bell knobs. I think speed knobs are the best bet, ergonomically.

They feel funny when I grab them for a twist.

How do you like the sound of the stock pickups? How's the nut and fretwork out of the box?

To answer your question: if top hats feel funny, go with speed knobs!

I like the looks of reflector tophats, probably because that's what my first Gibson had, but if the smaller knobs feel wrong to you then go for the speed knobs.

Shop around a little bit. There are a few different, cool styles you can get in a speed knob too.

I'm warming up to them. The product pages for aftermarket knobs describe them as either "fine-knurled, 24 point, for CTS pots" or "coarse-knurled, 18 point, for Alpha pots". Well, the pots in this guitar are CTS branded, but they appear to have coarse knurling. I suspect it's unlikely that either type will fit them. Plus, I do like to have my guitars different, and the bell knobs are different. So there.

Yes, they are metric pots. If you want to go to standard pots you will need to ream out the cutouts to fit the wider shaft. I am doing the same to an Epi G400 I just picked up and am gutting. That will be getting reflector bell knobs

So the "coarse knurled for Alpha" will fit them?

I'm not aware of more than 2 spline types and from what I've come across, they don't vary between pot brands, though with manufacturing variances some may seat better than others

Check out the part of this Stew Mac page, below the pricing, where it shows the two spline types. See how they match up with the splined shafts on your Epiphone.

You can see here the loose pot (CTS std) is a smooth spline vs the Epiphone. The splines on the Epi's pots are pointier / sharper
