It's hard to get that shaft in focus, isn't it?

Do you think the CTS shaft and the Epiphone shaft have the same number of points?

No, from what I can make out with my blurry photos and reading glasses I see them following the specs you posted from Stew Mac CTS smooth 24 spline, Epi course 18 spline.

I went with the "coarse knurled 18-point for Alpha pots" reflector top hat knobs. With shipping, a small fortune for four little blobs of plastic.

CTS also makes a metric pot. You wouldn’t need to ream out the hole if you decided to install those.

I think that's what these Epiphones have.

Still waiting for mine to be delivered, but I'll just swap the poker chip, and the switch tip, for Gibson ones. Just a fad, I know.

Pickups will be upgraded to a SD Vintage P90s set. Will think about tuners and bridge swaps after I play it a bit.

Love the stock knobs, really don't anything else really fits in a Special.

The knobs that Epiphone has on there are, visually, the same as the ones that Gibson put on these guitars back in the 50's. So my vote was to keep them as they are.

Well, the Vintage P90 set (or Antiquities) are absolutely essential upgrades here. Seems like a great guitar to mod.

How are the Gibson poker chip and switch tip different?

This is a fine answer that should be enough for most people, but I like to cause trouble, so I ordered a set of reflector top hats.

The black bell knobs look best IMO.

Add some skateboard grip tape to the upper outer rim, or saw in a notch every 1/16" or so, all the way around the top.

And don't forget the knob pointers!

True, but early '60s they came with reflector tophats, so it's "correct" either way.

This is incorrect. The single cut LP Special (and Junior) body styles were discontinued about two years before reflector knobs started being used. The only LP Specials and Juniors that got reflector knobs in the factory were the late DCs, before the switch to the SG body.

...the fact that it's an Epi aside, of course.

Yup those look great. I guess you figured the right splines. But I thought your issue with the stock knobs was the size and grip. Aren't those the same size?

The stock knobs are bell shaped. The sides taper, and they get pretty small at the top. The top hat knobs have vertical sides and are quite a bit larger in diameter. It makes a big difference.

Good point, I forgot about the single/double cut thing!
Regardless, to my eyes it looks right. But I have those same knobs on a '77 Marauder so clearly I am not to be trusted on this issue...

I think I like the original ones better, but I understand that the ergonomics of the new ones are better. I will take ergonomics over looks all the time.
